Thank you, Teresa, for giving me the opportunity to share my heart on this topic.
We talk a lot about burnout in nursing, but we don’t talk nearly enough about the role our finances can play in it.
So many nurses are looking for the next side hustle, extra shift, or additional stream of income. But sometimes, more income isn’t the real answer. The deeper issue may be a lack of financial clarity, financial wisdom, and a plan for the money we’re already earning.
Financial well-being matters. Because when we begin to get our finances in order, we create more choices around how much we work, where we work, and ultimately how we want to live.
Teresa, thank you again for creating the space for this conversation and allowing me to share a message that means so much to me.

Psych NPs, the highest-paying side hustle will not help much if the income does not have a plan.
We can work more, earn more, and still feel financially stuck when we have not decided what the additional money is supposed to change.
Is the income for debt?
Emergency savings?
Investing?
Funding a business?
Creating enough flexibility to reduce clinical hours?
Before choosing the side hustle, decide what assignment the income will have.
What would you need additional income to accomplish first?

Psych NPs, earning more does not always have to mean seeing more patients.
Picking up another clinical shift, accepting more telehealth appointments, or adding weekend coverage may be the fastest way to generate additional income. But it can also mean more documentation, more emotional responsibility, and even less control over our time.
Our expertise can be used in other ways. Teaching, writing, speaking, consulting, precepting, creating professional resources, and developing educational programs are all ways we can create value without automatically adding another patient panel.
The question is not whether clinical work is a good or bad side hustle. The better question is:
**Do I want to see more patients, or do I want another way to use my expertise?**
I explore this in today’s new article:
Your Side Hustle Does Not Have to Involve More Patients
I am also putting the finishing touches on Start Your Psych NP Side Hustle, a new course designed to help Psych NPs choose the right opportunity and build it with a clear purpose and plan.
What is one way you could use your Psych NP experience outside of direct patient care?

Today, I take a pause...I'm not okay.
Today, I lost a patient.
When you work in addiction and things go well for years, when you haven't lost someone in a long time, you almost forget, or maybe you just push it to the back of your mind, that it can still happen.
I tried to hold it together, but I couldn't. I keep thinking about our last visit. The laughter. How proud I was of their sobriety. How hopeful things seemed.
Then I had to remind myself that there were still others waiting for me, others still fighting their own battles. So I gathered myself as best I could and walked into the next visit. I tried to be present. I tried to stay focused. I hope I did.
Honestly, I don't remember much of what was said today. I just hope I was effective. I hope each person got what they needed. And if I fell short, I'll begin again tomorrow.
But today, I'll go home, grieve for a while, and allow myself to be human. I think that's okay.
Loss is one of the hardest parts of this work. But so is hope.
Tomorrow, I'll carry both with me.

Psych NPs, a side hustle without an assignment can quietly become another job.
It is easy to focus on how much extra money a side hustle could bring in, but the more important question is: What is that money supposed to accomplish? Is it helping you pay off debt, build an emergency fund, invest, start a business, or create the freedom to work fewer hours?
Without a clear purpose, extra income can easily be absorbed into everyday spending. You may find yourself working more without actually moving closer to the life you said you wanted.
Your side hustle should have a job. Give it a specific assignment, decide where the money will go before it arrives, and let that income move you toward a measurable goal.
A side hustle should not simply make you busier. It should help make you freer.
What assignment would you give an extra $1,000 per month?

Are you expecting good things?
Just because they have not happened lately or within the timeframe you hoped for does not mean you should stop expecting them.
Your expectation keeps you looking, believing, preparing, and moving forward. In many ways, expectation places a demand on what is possible because you refuse to settle into believing that nothing good is coming.
Keep looking for good things. Keep preparing for good things. Keep expecting good things to happen.
Do not let a delayed answer turn into a diminished expectation. This one is for you today!

Psych NPs, a side hustle can do more than bring in extra money. It can help us pay off debt, create breathing room, and begin building a path toward greater financial freedom.
But the goal is not to stay busy forever. The goal is to choose the right idea, build it correctly, manage the money intentionally, and use the income to create more options.
That is why I’m creating Start Your Psych NP Side Hustle, a short practical course to help Psych NPs choose the right opportunity, establish the business foundation, price their expertise, track the money, and decide what comes next.
