An ongoing educational program which curates discovery-based filmmaking experiences to promote cross-cultural exchange

Through its design and implementation of discovery-based filmmaking experiences, Filmbuilding’s vision is to build an ever-expanding worldwide network of change-makers who represent the most culturally sensitive and artistically inventive minds of our future. Stepping away from the structures and guidelines so often associated with filmmaking, the program seeks innovative ways to take advantage of the collaborative aspect of filmmaking for the purpose of development among people and the circles they are a part of. The program operates with the firm belief that a greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives, as well as one's own, can lead to more mutually inclusive and prosperous societies that can learn and grow from one another.

Filmbuilding: Community, session one, in the books ✅

16 Providence College students spent their first session doing something you don’t usually see on a syllabus: sitting down with a total stranger and asking what they actually care about. No hierarchy, no assigned roles, just co-creators setting their own ground rules for the semester ahead.

So thrilled to be doing this with the wonderful Nuria Alonso-Garcia, Professor of Global Studies at PC, who invited us into her classroom. Already know we’re going to learn as much from her students as they learn from us.

Can’t wait to see where these six groups take their topics. 🎬

Our founder, Tom Flint is trying to get to Austin, and we need about 30 seconds of your help. 🎬

Filmbuilding submitted a workshop to SXSW EDU 2027, and right now the public gets a say in what makes the final program. Over 1,500 proposals were entered this year.

The Antidote: Purpose Storytelling for an Age of AI

90 minutes, entirely hands-on, and everything runs on the phones already in the room. No equipment budget. No film background. Just people making something together, which is the whole point of what we do here.

Voting closes Sunday at 11:59pm PT.

Link in bio → make a free SXSW account → tap the heart next to the title.

That heart is the vote. Easy to miss.

Sonder started as an idea — and now it’s real. Grateful to be building this new workshop with these two and what it’s about to become.

Filmbuilding: Sonder is our newest workshop in collaboration with Lincoln-Sudbury High School. Building on the successes of Lincoln-Sudbury’s 2024 Filmbuilding: Belonging project, Sonder is a student-initiated and student-created film project designed to challenge stereotypes, build understanding, and genuine friendships by pairing one Boston resident and one Lincoln/Sudbury resident together for two 24-hour home exchanges. Stay tuned on the outcome of these short films!

Celebrating the Filmbuilding: Bridges of Hope Workshop 🌟

Bridges of Hope brought teenagers from Vaasa, Finland and its sister cities—Bellingham (USA), Kiel (Germany), Pärnu (Estonia), and Kherson (Ukraine)—into cross-cultural filmmaking teams to co-create original short films across borders.

Meeting online while filming in their own communities, students navigated language, distance, and difference to explore what “Bridges of Hope” means in a divided world. The result was more than four powerful films—it was youth-led cultural diplomacy in action, demonstrating how sister-city partnerships can evolve from symbolic relationships into meaningful, creative exchanges that build understanding when it matters most.

Check out the full films at youtube.com/ to see the wonderful outcomes of this experience!

Starting from small beginnings, Filmbuilding is now a global educational initiative, promoting and encouraging participants from all walks of life to share their lives through the power of shared story telling. We can’t wait to share more about how we are connecting voices from all over the world in co-created films and cross cultural exchange, so make sure to follow us as not to miss it!
