🥹👐 AT JUST 8 YEARS OLD, THIS BOY RECEIVED SOMETHING HE HADN’T HAD SINCE HE WAS TWO — A SECOND CHANCE TO USE HIS HANDS.
Imagine being a little child and waking up to a life completely different from the one you knew.
At just 2 years old, Zion Harvey survived a devastating infection that led to the amputation of both his hands and lower legs. The illness also caused severe damage to his kidneys.
But Zion kept moving forward. ❤️
At age 4, after spending two years on dialysis, he received a kidney transplant from his mother.
Then, in June 2015, another extraordinary chapter began.
At just 8 years old, Zion underwent a groundbreaking bilateral hand transplant, becoming the first child to receive a double-hand transplant. 🏥👐
Around 40 medical professionals, including 10 surgeons, worked through the night to connect the donor hands to Zion’s body.
The road to recovery wasn’t easy.
Through months of intensive rehabilitation, Zion slowly learned how to use his new hands — eventually writing his name, feeding himself, getting dressed and even swinging a baseball bat. ⚾💪
His brain also began adapting to the transplanted hands, helping him regain sensation and experience touch.
There were challenges, including episodes of rejection, but medication helped doctors manage them.
Zion’s journey became a remarkable example of resilience, medical innovation and the incredible ability of the human body to adapt. ❤️
His story reminds us that sometimes, a second chance can come in a way nobody ever imagined.
🥹 If you could send Zion one message of encouragement, what would you say? 👇
