“On June 5th 2026, Freddy, a 2-year-old American Pitbull Terrier, was dropped off at E83/L29 in the South Bronx. Despite not knowing his background, his behavior and personality was a testimony to the love + care he received before life put him in the care of NY’s Bravest. Freddy quickly made a home in the hearts of the firemen who answered the call to keep him away from the uncertain and often tragic stay in shelters that would have put him down due to the difficulty that comes with re-homing pitbulls. I had never cared for a dog before and was nervous and full of questions and doubt. But as I am trained to do, I faced this challenge head on. Freddy and I quickly became friends, and just as quickly, Freddy was family. I introduced Freddy to a large family of friends, relatives and loved ones, including the wonderful members of FDNY’s Engine 83 / Ladder 29, “da Bums on da Hill.” Almost 2 months later, news of a Virginia based family reached out to adopt Freddy. The news was bitter-sweet, as I had grown to love him while fostering him, but as I handed his leash to my aunt, I whispered to Freddy, You’re such a good boy... I love you...
