“I will coach until I can’t. It’s the only thing I can think about.” Martin Jacobson, known to many as @coachjakenyc, is the winningest high school soccer coach in New York City history. And at 80 years old, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. @newyorknico spent a day at Manhattan’s Martin Luther King Jr. High School, where Jacobson has been a fixture for more than four decades, to see his passion for the sport in action. Prior to his arrival in 1994 and the formation of its soccer team, MLK was widely known for its troubled past — but along with championship trophies came higher graduation rates and scholarship awards. “This group of young men … have changed the whole demeanor of the school from one of the worst in the city to one of the best,” the coach tells us. Pair that with his own personal history — which includes overcoming a decades-long he**in addiction and a Hepatitis C diagnosis — and it’s easy to see why he’s considered a legend. From a recording-breaking Knicks win to historic World Cup matches, it’s sports summer in New York City. As we head toward the global tournament’s final match in the Big Apple’s backyard, we asked @newyorknico to help us tell stories of some of the city’s most interesting figures in soccer.
