On World Nature Conservation Day, SSJID recognizes the importance of protecting the natural landscapes and waterways that support a reliable water supply. Through planning, infrastructure investment, and management, we work to balance today's needs with the long-term health of the communities we serve.

Stewardship is more than a responsibility. It's a commitment to ensuring this essential resource remains available for generations to come.

As temperatures rise and more people spend time outdoors, it's important to remember that canals are not safe places to swim or play.

Water may appear calm on the surface, but strong currents can exist below, creating dangerous conditions that can quickly pull a person underwater. For your safety, never enter a canal.

Pet owners should take precautions as well. Keep dogs on a leash and discourage them from drinking the water or investigating unfamiliar materials along the banks.

Help keep your family, friends, and pets safe by staying away from canals and remaining aware of your surroundings.

Just because school is out for the summer doesn't mean learning has to stop!

Whether you're spending the day at home, heading out on a road trip, or looking for screen-free entertainment, SSJID offers fun educational resources that help kids explore the world of water.

From Dewy's Water Activity Book to the Salmon Survival Board Game, there are plenty of opportunities for kids to discover how water shapes our communities, supports agriculture, and sustains the environment.

SSJID Board Director John Holbrook recently participated in the American Public Power Association's Day of Giving in Boston.

Approximately 180 APPA volunteers from across the country spent the day completing projects at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston's Yawkey Club in Roxbury, including painting, landscaping, cleaning, and facility improvements to help create a welcoming space for local youth.

We're proud to see John represent SSJID while joining fellow leaders in giving back to the community.

Planning a trip to the river over the holiday weekend? Before you head out, take a few minutes to brush up on these important safety reminders:

🌊 River conditions can change quickly. Check scheduled flow releases before your visit: cdec.water.ca.gov/dynamicapp/QueryRES?s=gdw.
💦 Always check the water before jumping or diving in, and only do so in designated areas where it's permitted.
🏊‍♀️ Stay aware of your surroundings and know your limits as a swimmer.

Did you know that a water shortage in 1915 helped shape SSJID's future?

This year marks the 110th anniversary of Woodward Reservoir, which was completed in 1916 near Oakdale after District leaders recognized the need for additional water storage following a dry winter and limited supplies.

Named after one of SSJID's founding board members, the reservoir increased the District's storage capacity by 36,000 acre feet and strengthened water reliability throughout the region.

Today, Woodward Reservoir remains an important part of SSJID's water operations, continuing the work it was built to do, helping provide a dependable water supply for farms and communities.
