As I close this first chapter of my life, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and believed in me throughout my journey. Your kindness and guidance have helped shape the person I am today.

Now, I am excited to begin a new chapter as President of the Interact Club Diaspora Youth, where I look forward to growing as a leader, serving others, and becoming part of an even bigger global family through Interact and Rotary.

As our daughter graduates from Maple Grove Senior High School, our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the entire school community.

Thank you to the special education staff, teachers, paraprofessionals, school leadership, bus drivers, and support staff who cared for, encouraged, and believed in our daughter every day. Your kindness, patience, and dedication helped her grow not only academically, but also socially and emotionally.

A special thank you to her classmates and friends. Your friendship, acceptance, kind words, thoughtful gifts, and genuine support meant more than you will ever know. You created a sense of belonging that made school a place she looked forward to every day. In fact, many mornings she never wanted to miss school because she was excited to see all of you.

For a parent, there is no greater gift than knowing your child is loved, valued, and included. Thank you for helping make her high school experience so meaningful and successful.

We will never forget the impact you had on her life.

Today, my heart is filled with gratitude, pride, and emotion as I celebrate one of the greatest moments of my life: my daughter’s graduation from Maple Grove Senior High School.

Eighteen years ago, she entered this world weighing only 1 pound 7 ounces at Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. The odds were stacked against her from the very beginning. Doctors, specialists, and systems often focused on her limitations. As her father, I chose instead to focus on her possibilities.

Her journey has not been easy. There were moments of uncertainty, moments of fear, and moments when we had to fight simply to ensure she received the care, services, and opportunities she deserved. At one point, I even had to go to court to protect my parental rights and continue advocating for her health and well-being. As she grew, I fought to obtain the evaluations and diagnosis necessary for her to access the educational supports she needed to succeed.

Like many immigrant families, we encountered barriers that often felt overwhelming. We experienced situations where our voices were not always heard, where expectations for our daughter were lowered because of her disability, and where our ability as parents to advocate for her was questioned. Yet we refused to give up.

As a parent and former special education professional, I challenged those barriers. I pursued due process, fought for her educational rights, and ultimately prevailed. When the system failed to meet her needs, I made the difficult decision to homeschool her for several years, helping her rebuild confidence, strengthen her skills, and prepare for a new beginning.

That new beginning came when our family moved to Maple Grove.

There, my daughter found something every child deserves: a community that believed in her. Through the special education department at Maple Grove Senior High School, she found educators who saw her strengths, paraprofessionals who supported her growth, classmates who embraced her friendship, and a school culture that gave her a true sense of belonging.

She was not defined by her disability. She was recognized for her humanity, her potential, and her unique gifts.

Today, she crossed the graduation stage surrounded by friends, teachers, and supporters who genuinely care about her. She earned her diploma through perseverance, courage, and determination. The little girl who weighed only 1 pound 7 ounces now stands as a proud high school graduate.

As Chair of the Education Committee of the Minneapolis NAACP, I have witnessed many educational experiences across our region. As a father, I can say that the compassion, professionalism, and commitment demonstrated by the educators and support staff who worked with my daughter made a meaningful difference in her life. Our family will forever be grateful.

This accomplishment is even more special because just last weekend she was installed as the first President of the Interact Club Diaspora Youth, sponsored by the Rotary Club of I-94 Inclusive. Her leadership journey is only beginning.

To every parent raising a child with special needs: never allow anyone to place limits on your child’s future. Your child may learn differently, communicate differently, or experience the world differently, but they are capable of greatness. With love, advocacy, patience, and the right support, they can achieve remarkable things.

Today is not simply a graduation. It is a victory for resilience over doubt, for advocacy over obstacles, and for hope over fear.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to every teacher, paraprofessional, bus driver, therapist, administrator, friend, and community member who contributed to my daughter’s success. Thank you for seeing her, believing in her, and helping her grow.

Most importantly, thank you to her mother. Behind every milestone was your unwavering love, countless sacrifices, sleepless nights, and steadfast commitment. This achievement belongs to you as much as it belongs to our daughter.

My daughter, you have taught us all what courage looks like. You have shown us that success is not measured by where we begin, but by the determination we demonstrate along the way.

Today, you graduated with your diploma in hand, your future before you, and a community standing proudly behind you.

We could not be more proud.

Let us continue to advocate for students with disabilities, because every child deserves the opportunity to learn, belong, thrive, and reach their highest potential.
