Custom rugs without the scary ācustomā price tag.
One of my favorite parts of designing a home? Finding resources that let us create exactly what the space needs ā instead of settling for āclose enough.ā
Iām loving the possibilities from RuggleUp for completely custom rugs. Wool, New Zealand wool, merino wool, silk, jute⦠so many gorgeous textures, colors and combinations to play with. š¤
And the best part? We can customize the exact size and shape for the room ā something that can make a HUGE difference in how a space feels and functions.
Beautiful quality, reasonable pricing AND good lead times? Thatās the kind of designer resource Iām always happy to add to our palette. š
What if your bedroom could make you exhale the minute you walked in? š¤
For our Springdale Project in Princeton, this 22ā Ć 18ā primary suite was designed to be so much more than a place to sleep.
Itās a bedroom, a cozy sitting room, a quiet place to unwind by the fireā¦and it has a few secrets hiding in plain sight. š
Those paneled walls? Theyāre not all what they seem. Pressure-release panels conceal a private coffee + w**e bar, so morning coffeeāor an evening glass of w**eāis only a few steps away without adding visual clutter to the room.
Thatās one of my favorite parts of designing a large multifunctional space: giving it everything you want it to do, without letting it feel like itās doing too much.
The goal here was simple: calm, warm, layered and peaceful.
Because sometimes luxury isnāt about adding more.
Itās about designing a space that makes you want to stay. š¤
Would you have guessed there was a coffee + w**e bar hiding behind those panels?
What came first⦠the design chicken šor the dream egg?š„
Or in our world⦠the dream kitchen or all the little details that make it one?
Flooring⦠Cristallo counters⦠cabinet finishes⦠lighting... custom hood⦠A shape we can already see in our heads, and need our clients to see it too.
One decision leads to another, and somewhere along the way, a collection of individual choices starts looking a whole lot like the home we imagined from the beginning. āØ
This Princeton whole-house project with L Brooke Homes, LLC is moving from vision ā selections ā reality, and we can already tell this kitchen is going to be a dream to use.
Breaking ground in less than 1 month ā come along for the journey!

See anything unusual? š Look closelyā¦
No? Perfect. š
Because hidden inside this pretty āafterā of our Lavallette primary bathroom renovation are two solutions to construction problems we discovered only AFTER demolition began.
Theyāre nearly impossible to spotāand thatās exactly the point. Take a good look and please guess before you read on⦠š
THIS is one of my favorite parts of renovation design: making a construction problem disappear. A little creativity, a little construction know-howā¦and hopefully a finished space that leaves you wondering, āWaitāwhereās the problem?ā š
Swipe through to see the BEFORE and AFTER, take your best guess at what we were hidingāand then keep reading for the answers!
Okay, ready? Hereās what you couldnāt seeā¦
Hidden problem 1: We planned for both of these beautiful arched mirrors to be recessed medicine cabinets. But after demo, we discovered that part of the wall behind the right mirror was exterior wallāwhich meant we couldnāt recess a medicine cabinet into it without compromising the insulation.
The solution: We literally cut the medicine cabinet off the back of the right mirror! The left mirror is a fully functioning medicine cabinet, while the right is its very convincing āfake.ā Same look, completely different construction. š
Hidden problem 2: That exterior wall created another challenge. We couldnāt run the sink plumbing inside the wall because of the potential for freezing pipes.
The solution: We added a mini knee wall tucked underneath the floating vanity to conceal the plumbing going through the floor. It allowed us to safely reroute the pipes AND keep the floating vanity look that was so important to the design.
Two problems. Two solutions. And neither one gets to steal the show. š

Dark & dramatic or light & luminous⦠which powder room steals your heart? ā„ļø
When we design a home, the powder room is one of our favorite spaces to elevate.
Why? Because itās the room almost every guest experiences. Itās a chance to surprise people with something unexpected, layered, and memorableāwithout committing to that level of boldness throughout the entire home.
For this concept, we explored two completely different moods using the same room proportions:
š¤ Moody + dramatic with sculptural travertine, black tile, and warm metallic textures.
š¤ Soft + luminous with fluted marble, shimmering neutrals, and an airy spa-like feel.
Neither is ābetterāāthey simply create a different emotional experience.
Which one would you choose for your own home⦠LEFT or RIGHT? š
āWait⦠you still do window treatments?ā
Iāve been hearing that question a lot lately from clients I worked with 15, 20⦠even 25 years ago.
The answer is a resounding YES! š
When I started Distinctive Interior Designs back in 1998, custom window treatments, blinds & shutters were the foundation of my business. Over the years, weāve grown to include renovation design, space planning, kitchens, baths, and whole-home transformationsābut we never stopped creating beautiful, custom window treatments and all product to address your privacy and light control needs!
This video is for a client whose window treatments I installed 15 years ago. They served her well, but it was time for a fresh look that better reflects her home today.
Whether you need one room, an entire house, motorized shades, woven woods, shutters, drapery, or a complete renovation, weāre here to help.
So if youāve been wondering if we still do blinds and window treatments⦠we absolutely doāand weād love to help you with your next project.
⨠Sometimes the smallest update makes the biggest impact.
The best design solutions usually start with the strangest problems⦠like building a cozy den around a massive burgundy safe.
This bulky functional piece was taking up significant floor space in another room. Instead of treating it as a problem, we tucked it into a closet, created lift storage above, and designed the entire den experience outward from there.
Vintage airplanes. Antique trains. Layered personality. Cozy TV watching.
Because great design isnāt about creating a pretty room.
Itās about creating spaces that reflect the people living in them and sometimes their history too!
Whether we like it or not, our kids grow up. š¤
Their toys disappear. Their visits get shorter.
But we never stop wanting them to come home.
This bedroom was designed with that feeling in mind ā elevated ⦠and still familiar. Because thoughtful design isnāt only about how a room looks. Itās about how someone feels when they walk back into it.
Maybe the worn teddy bear and old truck are there for a reason. š§øš„šŖ
Because home should always leave room for who they used to be⦠and who theyāve become.
⨠Designing spaces worth coming home to.
Not every favorite feature in a home is the dramatic one. āāØ
When we suggested adding an InstaHot to this coffee station, the homeowner honestly thought it was unnecessary.
Now?
He says he couldnāt imagine living without it.
Sometimes the BEST design decisions are the little everyday luxuries that quietly improve how you live, move, and start your mornings.
And yes⦠we designers secretly love when clients end up saying:
āYou were right.ā š
Would YOU add an InstaHot to your kitchen or beverage station?

3 weeks. 10th birthday. 10 friends coming over⦠no pressure.
From āNO BOYS ALLOWEDā⦠to āeveryone wants to hang out hereā.
And an amazing 10th birthday gift surprise!
This wasnāt just a refresh⦠it was a complete transformation from her parents and grandparents ā designed to feel like her growing-up chapter.
Softer. Thoughtful. Still a little fun & playful.
A space she can hang out in, whisper secrets in, and grow into.
Because the best gift isnāt just something you unwrap in seconds ⦠this one is about how the space feels every single day for years. āØ
And yes⦠the party was a hit š
