Throwback Thursday: The Beginning of LifePath Systems

This April 1986 clipping from The Allen American captures an important moment in our history.

At the time, local leaders were discussing how Collin County would continue providing mental health and intellectual and developmental disability services after the planned dissolution of the North Central Texas MHMR facility later that year. The concern was clear: people in Collin County needed access to care close to home, without gaps in service.

That work helped lead to the creation of the Collin County Mental Health Mental Retardation Center. The original name reflected the terminology used by state systems at the time. Years later, in keeping with changing language around intellectual and developmental disabilities, the organization began doing business as LifePath Systems.

As we celebrate 40 years, we are looking back at the decisions, partnerships, and community needs that shaped who we are today.

LifePath Systems is conducting a Community Needs Assessment to better understand what’s working, what’s not, and where we need to grow when it comes to mental health and substance use services.

- Crisis care during difficult moments
- Counseling and behavioral health services
- Early intervention for children
- Support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Helping people navigate systems that can feel overwhelming

The Foundation’s 40 for 40 campaign helps continue that work for the next generation of people who need it. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminded that strong communities are built through consistent care, connection, and support over time — not just during moments of crisis.

Support looks different at different points in life. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it might mean building skills, finding routine, or gaining more independence over time.

Mental health starts earlier than a lot of people realize. With young kids, it often shows up in how they communicate, connect, or react to what’s around them.
