Perhaps the measure of a great house is not how insistently you notice the architecture, but how naturally you experience the life it was designed to hold.
That is what makes representing architect-designed homes particularly rewarding. The work is not simply to present rooms and specifications. It is to recognize the ideas behind them and give those ideas the context they deserve.
At 6016 Chesterbrook Road, Mark McInturff choreographed the ordinary remarkably well.

The house does not stop at the exterior wall.
At 6016 Chesterbrook Road, the protected front lawn gives the architecture room to breathe. Behind it, cooking, dining, lounging, gardens, and play extend outward from the house before the land begins to rise toward the woods.
The landscape becomes another sequence of spaces to inhabit.

A working kitchen does not need to look busy.
At Chesterbrook, custom cabinetry allows storage and much of the machinery of daily life to disappear. The architectural idea is simple: resolve function thoroughly enough that visual order can remain.
These quieter decisions are precisely why architect-designed homes ask for more than documentation. They ask to be understood.

Every hour has its own favorite room.
A central skylight brings daylight into the heart of 6016 Chesterbrook Road rather than leaving the interior dependent on windows at its edges. As the sun moves overhead, emphasis shifts from one room to another.
The plan stays the same. The experience does not.

Some houses are understood through a single architectural gesture. Others reveal themselves through the relationships between spaces.
At 6016 Chesterbrook Road, Mark McInturff, FAIA, explores a more nuanced balance: privacy without isolation, openness without sacrificing definition, and rooms that remain connected while retaining their individual purpose.
Our latest Featured Home looks more closely at architecture designed around how a house is actually lived in.

The most considered residential architecture does not demand attention at every turn. Over time, it becomes inseparable from the routines it was designed to accommodate.
Our latest Featured Home explores how Mark McInturff's architecture reveals itself gradually, through light, movement, spatial connection, and the ordinary patterns of a day.
At 6016 Chesterbrook Road in McLean, McInturff substantially reworked an existing 1950s house around a series of carefully resolved relationships.

NaCl House still feels remarkably current more than a decade after its completion.
Not because it anticipated trends.
Because it was never designed around them in the first place.
Architecture driven by authorship tends to age differently. Its value is not dependent on surface styling or market cycles, but on proportion, spatial intelligence, material discipline, and clarity of intent. Those qualities remain legible long after trend language disappears.
David Jameson’s NaCl House operates with that level of precision. Every projection, opening, and moment of compression feels deliberate. The house rewards repeated observation rather than instant consumption.

NaCL House never relies on scale for presence
Despite spanning nearly 6,000 square feet across three levels, the structure settles into the site with remarkable restraint. Cantilevered forms extend outward while preserving openness around the home itself, avoiding the visual heaviness typical of large new-build construction.
