How much Homeowners Insurance Should I Carry?

Your homeowners policy should be sufficient to cover the cost of debris removal and construction of a new comparable home in the event of a total loss.

In Spokane the average cost per square foot of new home construction is about $250-$280 for an average home and up to $400 for a custom home.

If you take the square footage of your home and multiply it by these numbers you can get a rough estimate of whether you are adequately insured or not.

Example: 1,800 square foot home x $280 / square foot = $504,000 of coverage to rebuild. Accounting for debris removal coverage of around $550,000 is a good rough estimate.
