Community Legal Center
Seeking Justice, Changing Lives Since its inception in 1994, the CLC has provided civil legal services to Memphians of modest means.
CLC’s civil law program serves Memphis’ “working poor” whose income falls below the living wage level. The Immigrant Justice Program (IJP) serves persons in Memphis Immigration Court’s geographic jurisdiction whose income falls below a living wage. The immigrants of Memphis and Shelby Co. are most in need of legal assistance with their status, including vulnerable unaccompanied minors, victims of domestic violence or persecution, and long-term US residents who find themselves in removal proceedings. The CLC also works extensively with victims of elder abuse, and provides assistance to those seeking to represent themselves in divorce proceedings through its Pro Se Divorce Clinic.

Financial exploitation is one of the most common forms of elder abuse and one of the least reported.
Older adults can be targeted by scams, caregivers, or even trusted individuals through fraud, coercion, or misuse of funds. The impact is immediate and often life-changing, threatening independence and stability.
During Elder Abuse Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the importance of recognizing the warning signs of financial abuse and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.
At the Community Legal Center, our Elder Law Program helps older adults protect their rights, safeguard their assets, and access legal support when they need it most.
Every older adult deserves to age with security, dignity, and peace of mind. Click the link in our bio to learn more about how we serve the aging population here in Memphis.

April was a busy and meaningful month for Community Legal Center.
We were honored to be the beneficiary of an incredible concert at Growlers featuring Blvck Hippie, Jombi, and Zoë Dominguez. We are so grateful to everyone who came out to support our work and mission. We also received a grant award from St. Mary’s that will help us continue expanding access to justice for all.
Out in the community, our team hosted an Estate Planning Clinic at the Officer Geoffrey Redd Library, joined fellow organizations at the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis Grantee Showcase, and continued supporting local tenants through our Renter’s Rights Clinic.
Thank you to every supporter, partner, volunteer, donor, and client who made April such a meaningful month for CLC. We’re proud of the work happening across Memphis every day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Estate Planning Clinic at the Officer Geoffrey Redd Library on April 22! 💙
Through these free clinics, the Community Legal Center helps individuals and families take important steps to protect their futures by creating essential estate planning documents like wills, powers of attorney, and advance healthcare directives.
We know it’s not always possible to attend a clinic, which is why our Elder Law team also offers estate planning appointments at our office. If you’re interested in getting started on your estate plan, we’re here to help.
Planning ahead is one of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones.

This March, we connected with students at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law during an Alternative Spring Break panel featuring our IJP Director, Colton Bane, sharing insights on public interest law and community advocacy.
We continued serving clients at Cornelia Crenshaw Library and hosted 2 additional estate planning clinics, helping individuals and families plan for the future. We also held a Renters’ Rights Clinic to support tenants navigating housing challenges.
Our team attended the Slingshot Impact Awards and celebrated Women’s History Month, recognizing the impact of women in our field and community. Special thanks to our Pro Se Director, Christina, for volunteering at the Midtown Legal Clinic hosted by Idlewild Presbyterian Church.
