UC Merced Recreation is housed in the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center and the Student Activities and Athletics Center on the UC Merced campus.
We offer several different ways for students and staff to stay active and healthy. Check our recreation website for fitness classes and other activities. We also offer outdoor adventures for those who love to keep in touch with their wild side, Sport Clubs for those who are athletically competitive and Intramurals for those who just want to have fun with their fellow students.

Start your UC Merced journey with an unforgettable adventure through Yosemite! 🌲
The Week of Wilderness (WOW) is a FREE 5-day backpacking experience designed to help incoming students make friends, build confidence, develop leadership skills, and connect with the UC Merced community before the first day of classes.
✨ No backpacking experience is needed, and outdoor gear will be provided!
📅 Trip Dates: August 17–21, 2026
🏡 Early move-in: August 16
🎒 Space is limited to approximately 15 students.
FREE! A $100 deposit is required upon acceptance and is fully refunded after completing the program.
⏰ Application Deadline: July 31 at 5:00 PM
