A crew found out one of their hands was turning 21 on location. Working, not out celebrating.
So they marked it right there. They came off the rig for a few minutes, and it went from the drill site manager on down. As our coach Andres Santiago tells it: "They wanted to make a special couple minutes for that guy."
Nobody briefed that. No program required it. That is just what a healthy crew does: the work gets done, and the people matter.
Here's to that young man, working for his family at 21. The patch is lucky to have him, and he's lucky to have that crew.
Tell us about a crew that did something like this for one of their own. We would like to hear it.

ROPE Solutions hiring Leadership Coach (Embedded Field Operations) 14/14 in United States | LinkedIn Posted 2:59:36 PM. You led people where the consequences were real. We need that on the front lines.ROPE Solutions…See this and similar jobs on LinkedIn.
Festus Hagan can still tell you about his first morning in the oil field: February 12, 1979, the day a man broke his leg on the rig and Festus was first through the door.
47 years later, roustabout to Director of Drilling and Completions, his conviction never moved: everything we do can be done safely. Hear him tell it, including why a crew with calm lives at home runs a safer, better rig.
If you learned the job from a man like Festus, tell us who he was. We read every one.
"You can't mass-produce good guys. You can't mass-produce solid character." - Clayton Boyd, ROPE COO
Skills can be taught. Character shows up already built. That is the standard behind every coach who walks onto a location wearing our name.
Think about the best hand you ever worked with. What made him the best, his skill or the way he carried himself?
"You can't poster your way out of a poor leadership environment." - Russell Williamson, President & CEO, ROPE Solutions
Every rig has the posters. Stop work authority. Speak up. Brother's keeper. What changes behavior is a leader close enough to ask, to notice, and to build trust one hitch at a time. The posters don't change the behavior. Leadership changes the behavior.
What's on your walls right now, and what's actually happening underneath them?
Festus Hagan gave the oil field 47 years, and this is one of the truest things he told us: when things are calm at home, safety and efficiency on location improve.
It is why our coaches teach life skills right alongside planning and leadership. The work gets better when the whole man does.
If that rings true from your own kitchen table, share this one with somebody who needs to hear it.
ROPE Solutions is proud to announce Steve Brush as our new Director of Human Performance.
Steve brings the discipline of Marine Force Recon to a mission that lives and dies on the front lines: helping crews lead better where the stakes are highest. For him, that's not theory, it's purpose.
At ROPE, human performance isn't a slogan. It's the entire job. Our coaches embed with teams in the raw, real conditions that decide whether people go home.
Same crews. Same equipment. Elite leadership, elite results.
Steve, you earned it. Drop him a congratulations below.
Elite. Embedded. Effective.
Shane started offshore as a roustabout and worked his way up to drilling superintendent over 32 years. Ask him what coaching brings to a rig and he doesn't talk about programs. He talks about the lead man showing the work instead of just assigning it, until the newest hand on location is teaching the one who showed up after him.
That's the trickle effect, and it's the whole point.
If a hand ever taught you this job by showing you instead of telling you, go thank him today.
"I’m not the greatest. I just know what it takes." - Keith Proze, ROPE coach
Keith gave the Air Force 27 and a half years, served alongside our founder, and has spent fourteen years since walking onto rigs. Crews from his very first location still call him. Humility opens more doors than any resume, and Keith is proof.
Who is the coach or hand who taught you what it takes? Tag him.
"We're like the Miracle-Gro." - Jonathan Mackin, ROPE coach
Jonathan flew Marine Corps helicopters and Coast Guard search and rescue for twenty-one years before he ever set foot on a rig. He says the same thing happens on almost every location: about 48 hours in, the crew realizes the coach is there to help them get better, and the culture starts to turn on its own. The growth was always theirs.
If you have worked a location where the whole crew finally clicked, you know the feeling. What turned it?
