It’s an honor to be recognized by .foundation but as artists I’m sure that many of us are conflicted when we receive an award because it’s not why we create. We do it because we have to. Certificate of Birth aka DOA is a very personal piece as it speaks to the label placed on African Americans in the 60’s. On my birth certificate, my mother, father and my race is listed as “Colored.” Many forget the Washington DC was still a sleepy, southern town, south of the Mason-Dixon Line in the early 60’s. So, it was comfortable labeling me/us and placing targets on us that we are still attempting to avoid today. Born in DC, lives and creates in Miami.
