Waterlust

The Waterlust team had the privilege of joining the Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Conservation Program for a morning of sea turtle nest excavations! This team surveys the entire 19 miles of beach in the county every day from March to October. This particular morning, they noticed a few of the loggerhead nests had little turtle tracks which meant the nest probably hatched the night before! 🐾

During an excavation, data is collected including the number of hatched and whole eggs found in the nest. The number of hatched eggs gives them insight into how many baby sea turtles made it out. But sometimes there are a few stragglers that didn’t leave with their siblings. So the team gives them a helping hand to start their life at sea. We were just excited to see some baby sea turtles 🤓🐢

It’s Fieldwork Friday! We had the pleasure of joining our Mermaid print cause partners Ocean Rescue Alliance Int. for a day of monitoring their artificial reefs.

ORAIs latest artificial reef modules off the coast of Hollywood Beach, FL were deployed in May 2025. Since then, ORAI, in partnership with the Int. SeaKeepers Society and a team of volunteer scientific divers monitor six sites: 4 artificial reefs and 2 natural reefs adjacent to the modules.

Monitoring for this project included fish surveys, benthic and soft coral surveys, and photogrammetry imaging of each artificial reef module. Photogrammetry is a fascinating tool used in many different industries. Basically, it a process of capturing 2D images and stitching them together to create a 3D model. A great tool for visualizing changes over time!

The monitoring data will help the ORAI team determine how the artificial reefs are developing biologically and structurally over time, and provide a way to compare them to the nearby natural reefs to evaluate their ecological performance.

Out here on the Gulf platforms, these leggings are basically camouflage for the real stars of the show… the lionfish. We’re hunting them down, one by one, keeping the native fish and corals safe.
