🇭🇹 HAITIAN HISTORY | SEPTEMBER 2, 1804 🇭🇹

On this day in Haitian history, September 2, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines was proclaimed Emperor of Haiti.

Only eight months after Haiti declared its independence, the leaders of the newly liberated nation elevated Dessalines, the revolutionary leader who had played a decisive role in the struggle against slavery and colonial domination, to the title of Emperor Jacques I of Haiti.

This moment represented more than a title. It was a powerful declaration that Haiti was a sovereign nation, no longer under the authority of a foreign power.

Dessalines would be formally crowned on October 8, 1804. (HaitiDocs)

Today, we honor Jean-Jacques Dessalines—a revolutionary, a founding father, and a symbol of Haiti’s uncompromising pursuit of freedom and independence.

🇭🇹 One People. One Nation. Forever Free.

LIBERTÉ OU LA MORT.
Liberty or Death.

🇭🇹 August 31, 1793 — A Historic Turning Point in Haitian History

August 31, 1793, stands as one of the most significant dates in the history of Haiti. During the Haitian Revolution, French Commissioner Léger-Félicité Sonthonax proclaimed the abolition of slavery throughout the northern region of Saint-Domingue, including Cap-Français (present-day Cap-Haïtien).

This proclamation marked a profound turning point in the struggle for freedom, challenging the institution of slavery and advancing the revolutionary movement toward emancipation.

The events of 1793 would become part of the extraordinary journey that ultimately led to the Haitian Revolution, the abolition of slavery across the colony, and Haiti’s independence in 1804.

🇭🇹 August 31, 1793 — A date worth remembering in the history of Haiti and the global struggle for freedom.
