history that government bombed it's own city when police dropped two bombs on the MOVE compound in Philadelphia, killing eleven, including 5 children, and allowed a fire to burn that ultimately destroyed 65 houses. June 19, 1865 was the day that Union General Gordon Granger announced to slaves in Galveston, Texas that they were free people - over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. June 12, 1963 is the day Mississippi's NAACP field secretary, 37-year-old Medgar Evers, was murdered outside his home in Jackson. June 19, 1964 was the day The Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed Congress, giving Africans equal access and greater voter protections, and outlawing discrimination on the basis of 'race'. We call on all people of color to devote time during the period from May 13 - June 19 to specific action in the pursuit of justice and to honor and demonstrate respect for our history.
