As fireworks fill the sky and many celebrate America’s 250th, I find myself doing something much quieter.
I place my right hand over my heart and whisper, thank you.
Thank you to the remarkable cast of the South Florida Premiere of The Color Purple. You trusted one another. You trusted the story. Night after night, you gave pieces of yourselves so that an audience could leave more whole than when they arrived.
Thank you to our musicians, designers, stage managers, technicians, crew, front-of-house staff, volunteers, and every hand that built this production from the ground up. Theatre is never made by one person. It is made by a community choosing, every day, to believe in something bigger than themselves.
Thank you to our South Florida audiences, and to those who traveled across cities and state lines, to laugh, cry, worship, and witness with us. You reminded us that live theatre still has the power to gather strangers into family.
To Zaylin, my creative partner in every sense of the word: thank you. This production demanded everything we had. It stretched us, humbled us, tested our faith, and, in return, gave us one of the most rewarding artistic experiences of our lives. We will never be the same because of it.
And to Alice Walker, whose words continue to plant seeds of healing across generations, thank you. The world of The Color Purple reminds us that joy is resistance, love is survival, and noticing the color purple in a field is itself an act of gratitude.
As America reflects on 250 years, I am reminded that this country’s story has never belonged to one voice alone. It is stitched together by the songs, prayers, dreams, labor, grief, and triumph of people who insisted on being seen.
This week, we added our voices to that chorus.
Our art is American.
Our stories are American.
Our hope is American.
We, too, sing America.

Toddra!!!!! You are a rare jewel. I thank God that you were a gift to us all. The way you loved, your talent and ability to change hearts and minds. I’m deep saddened by all the things we won’t get to do but I will member all the joy we shared. The work you’ve done is the legacy you always spoke about. I will miss our 3 hour conversations. I will miss your collaborative spirit in the rehearsal room. I’ve cried more tears than I can make. I’m deeply hurt but your spirit still brings me comfort. Take your finale bow my friend. RIP the talented and legendary Toddra Brunson you will be forever missed.

This spring at LSU, I had the opportunity to perform an excerpt from Emancipation Blues entitled God Is a Black Woman.
The piece is a tribute to my mother and to the Black women whose love, labor, resilience, and grace continue to sustain families, communities, and generations.
“Only She can mother America’s children of many colors, black, white, and in between. For she endures with patience the trials and adversities that only come with being a Black Woman.”
What made this performance particularly special was that it was the first time I danced to these words. Traditionally, God Is a Black Woman has been performed by a woman, so stepping into the work myself offered a different perspective—one rooted in gratitude, reverence, and admiration. Rather than speaking for Black women, I sought to honor them, to bear witness to their strength, and to acknowledge the profound ways they have shaped my life.
“God like, god sights, unseen, look at Her. Fearfully and wonderfully beautiful til the last drop, Ooh taste and see that God is a Black Woman.”
As a choreographer, actor, and storyteller, I am always interested in how movement can deepen our relationship to text. Revisiting this poem through my own body allowed me to discover new layers of meaning and connection, especially as a son reflecting on the woman who first taught me about unconditional love, sacrifice, and faith.
Thank you to my LSU MFA Acting community for witnessing this moment and embracing this work. And to my mother, who remains one of my greatest inspirations—this piece will always begin and end with you.

Closing out my first semester as a professor at Louisiana State University — and what a journey it has been.
Leaving Dillard High School, where I served as Dance Instructor and Head of Theatre, was not just a transition… it was divine alignment. Every step led me here — to this next level of purpose.
This semester, I had the honor of training young artists in the craft of acting — not just as performers, but as humans. Because the work is never only about the stage. It’s about empathy, awareness, truth, and the courage to exist fully in your own story.
To my students: thank you for your openness, your bravery, and your willingness to grow.
Cheers to a powerful first year… and I’m already looking forward to bringing the rhythm, the energy, and the storytelling of Jazz Dance to the program this Fall.
