JUNETEENTH, also known as FREEDOM DAY, is a holiday observed annually to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, specifically marking the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
