People ask us how we knew iDog Academy would be successful.

The answer is simple:

We didn’t build it on hope. We built it on a strategy.

From the beginning, we had a business plan, a strategy, a culture, and the right people behind it.

I brought the animal-training side — years of hands-on experience, CPDT-KA certification, behavior consulting, a Master’s in Wildlife Science, AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator experience, and specialized education in animal behavior and training.

My business partner brought something equally important — an Executive MBA from Kellogg and the business knowledge to help turn a great skill set into a real, sustainable company.

But one of the biggest parts of our strategy was our people.

We decided early that our staff wouldn’t just be employees.

We would treat them like family.

And there was another principle I refused to compromise on:

I am the professional responsible for the training curriculum.

I write the curriculum.
I develop the training systems.
I teach our trainers how to become great trainers.

Because being a great dog trainer and knowing how to build a great dog-training company are two completely different skill sets.

We combined business education + animal science + decades of hands-on experience + a strong culture + systems that could actually be taught.

Probably one of the biggest myths in dog training.

We don’t try to erase a dog’s past.

We teach the dog that it doesn’t have to live in that past anymore.

We’ve watched dogs that came to us shut down, fearful, reactive, or completely overwhelmed begin to move through the world with confidence again.

Sometimes the “old dog” you think is broken isn’t broken at all.

It just hasn’t been given the right language, structure, and opportunity to learn.

Two Rottweilers and a German Shepherd, all eating together, all growling.

No fight breaks out. That doesn't mean everything's fine — it usually means it's already been settled the hard way, probably more than once. These are working dogs. They've already learned what happens if they take it further, so now the growl does the talking instead.

But here's the part people miss: just because the fighting stopped doesn't mean the feeling did. The tension, the guarding, the need to protect what's "theirs" — that's still very much alive. It just found a quieter way to show up.

This is resource guarding, and it's one of the most common behaviors we work with. It's not something dogs "grow out of," and it's not something that gets fixed by letting them "work it out." It gets fixed with structure, leadership, and the right behavior modification protocol.
