One of the questions I get asked is, “How do plumbers replace pipes that are underneath a concrete slab?”

One answer is tunneling.

Instead of making extensive floor cuts throughout a home, plumbers can sometimes excavate beneath the foundation to access and replace underground drain piping from below. Every home is different, so the best repair method depends on the specific layout, the location of the problem, and the overall condition of the plumbing system.

This video gives you a look at a tunneling project while it’s still in progress. At this stage, the work is not complete. Final piping adjustments, testing, inspections, and backfilling are all important parts of the process before a project is finished.

One of the goals of PipeSense Consulting is to help homeowners understand what goes on behind the scenes and to give future plumbers a better appreciation for the craftsmanship that professional plumbing requires.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the day you stop learning is the day you stop growing. That’s especially true in plumbing. This trade is always evolving. The plumbing code is updated every four years, new products are introduced, and better installation methods are constantly being developed. That’s why I still study, ask questions, read the code, and look for opportunities to learn something new. I believe if you choose plumbing as your career, you should be excited about becoming a student of the trade for life. Master the fundamentals, stay humble enough to keep learning, and never settle for “good enough.” That’s how you build a career you can truly be proud of.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a plumbing instructor is watching a student grow beyond the classroom and begin applying what they’ve learned in the real world.

Ariel first came through my classroom at Florida International Training Institute, where I had the privilege of teaching him plumbing fundamentals and professional expectations. When an opportunity became available for him to gain hands-on field experience, I was proud to advocate for him.

In this video, Ariel is helping assemble a sanitary drainage system after we installed a 3-inch wye to pick up a floor sink. Every fitting, every measurement, and every connection is another opportunity to build confidence and develop the habits that make great plumbers.

I believe our responsibility as instructors goes beyond teaching code and installation techniques. Whenever possible, we should also mentor, encourage, and help students bridge the gap between education and real-world experience. That’s how we strengthen our industry and prepare the next generation of plumbing professionals.

I’m proud of the progress Ariel has made, and I know this is only the beginning. Keep showing up, stay humble, keep learning, and continue building your future. The trade rewards those who are committed to continuous growth.

The truth is, your first year in plumbing isn’t about speed—it’s about building a solid foundation.

Learn the fundamentals. Understand why plumbing systems work. Learn why the code requires certain methods. When you understand the “why” behind the work, you’ll make better decisions, solve problems with confidence, and build a career that lasts.

My goal as an instructor is to prepare future plumbers for real-world success by teaching them how to think critically and understand the entire plumbing system—not just install it.
