Elliot & Erick Jiménez are identical twin artists whose practice draws from photography, mixed media, sculpture, and installation to construct immersive worlds that explore memory, migration, spirituality, and the fluid nature of identity. Rooted in their experience as first-generation Cuban Americans and informed by Afro-Caribbean cosmologies, their work brings together Lucumí traditions, Western iconography, and art historical references to create a dialogue where inherited histories and contemporary experience converge.

This new body of work marks the artists’ first major series following El Monte, their debut solo museum exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Rather than departing from the questions that shaped that exhibition, these works represent a subtle evolution, one that shifts attention from the search for identity toward the continual process of transformation.

As first-generation Cuban Americans raised within an Afro-Cuban household, they have long grappled with the experience of belonging simultaneously to inherited and imagined homelands. While physically removed from the island, they continue to negotiate the traditions, stories, and spiritual lineages passed down. In this sense, these works inhabit an interior landscape—one that holds ancestry, memory, and identity in constant dialogue.

Across the series, the anonymous figures that have long occupied the Jiménez brothers’ visual language begin to undergo subtle yet profound changes. Shadow bodies dissolve into flowers, others emerge in luminous white, or exist suspended between fire, the natural world, and ritual. Rather than functioning as fixed symbols, these figures inhabit states of becoming, resisting singular definitions and stable identities. Their transformation mirrors the layered realities of Caribbean culture itself, where histories of migration, syncretism, adaptation, and survival have continually reshaped notions of self and belonging.

McGriff describes his paintings as thought experiments-spontaneous portraits generated through gestural mark-making. He paints figures in states of negotiation and performance, often bargaining with the systems by which they are governed, and with themselves. McGriff explains, “My practice is about spontaneity and memory, focusing on the use of imagined portraiture and landscape to capture ideas and feelings associated with experiences that are universal but personal.”

McGriff’s work is held at the permanent collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Rubell Museum, ICA Miami, NSU Art Museum, Orlando Museum of Art, El Espacio 23: Collection of Jorge Perez, The Bunker Artspace: Collection of Beth Rudin DeWoody, The Knight Foundation, The Hort Family Collection, Green Family Art Foundation, Jasteka Foundation, and Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places.

Following El Monte, their debut solo museum exhibition at Pérez Art Museum Miami, the new works extend the artists’ exploration of the cultural and spiritual traditions they were raised within, turning toward transformation and the fluid nature of identity.

Drawing from Joseph Campbell’s seminal work on comparative mythology, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Pozzo considers the archetypal hero’s journey through the lens of the contemporary diasporic experience: departure becomes a threshold, displacement a landscape of uncertainty and adaptation, and the search for home inseparable from the search for self.

📣 ACQUISITION ALERT — Jared McGriff’s painting has been acquired by the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale !

We are delighted to announce that the NSU Art Museum has acquired the painting, A Swim Across and Up. This acquisition was made possible through the generous support of Alberto Ibarguen.

New work by McGriff is currently featured in “Close to Home,” a group exhibition at the NSU Art Museum, through October 4th.

Close to Home brings together artists from the South Florida community whose creative source is their private world and the emotional ties that most intimately define them. The exhibition concept emerged from a growing recognition of artists in the region presenting work that depicted or functioned as an homage to those closest to them: fellow artists, romantic partners, chosen family, kin, ancestral lineage, and loved ones who have passed.

The exhibition considers how in this moment, artists grappling with questions of subject matter and meaning in their work, have increasingly turned toward the central importance of relationships—recognizing how supportive, collaborative, memorial, and transformative bonds can serve as catalysts for vital creative expression.
