MCHS - Geometry In Construction

Students have been learning about properties of triangles such as; Pythagorean Theorem, slope, and special right triangles. A great activity student completed was laying out and building stair stringers. Students learned to use a carpenter's square all while applying slope and the Pythagorean Theorem. I had each student make their first cut with a hand saw before being able to use power tools.

We would like to thank Joel Sherwood and Willbee Transit-Mix Company Inc for their donation to our class. They donated the wire mesh and concrete for our patio project. If it wasn't for their generosity this great hands-on learning project would not have been possible. For many of these students this will be something they remember forever. We truly appreciate your support. Thank You Willbee!

One of the most exciting days so far for the students. They poured the concrete for the patio that they've been working hard on for the past week and a half. The students were able to get first hand experience with raking concrete, pulling up the wire mesh, floating edges and a little bit of finishing with some concrete pavers.

A lot happening in the last week. The class worked on the final stages of preparation for the patio. They finished setting the forms, graded and compacted the fill sand, then added the wire mesh.

We would like to thank Cody Lester and Lester Brothers for donating the fill sand for our patio project. They were great to work with and delivered the same day. Without their generosity, this project would have been a lot more challenging.

This past week, the students have been working on their patio project at the High School. We are converting unutilized space outside the common area into a concrete patio where students and staff will be able to enjoy working outside. The first step of this project was to lay out the design and remove the sod and top soil. Then we formed the area and brought in fill sand to bring up the grade. We finished forming and grading the area, added the wire mesh and now its ready for concrete this week.

Students got experience using a variety of tools and applying different math concepts while prepping the patio area.
