Not all fence post holes are created equal in Massachusetts

Your neighbor's fence holds up perfectly fine at 36" deep. Yours might be heaving out of the ground by spring.

Here's the thing: Massachusetts soil is all over the map. Rocky glacial deposits in Worcester County, clay-heavy soils around Boston, sandy soil on the Cape, they all freeze and shift differently.

That's why frost line depth isn't one-size-fits-all.

Know your soil type:

Rocky soil → 36–42" (rocks help anchor posts below frost line)
Clay soil → 42–48" (clay expands when frozen—you need deeper to stay below the freeze)
Sandy soil → 36–40" (drains better, less heave risk)
Wet soil → 42–48" + drainage (water + freeze = post rot)

Ask your installer: "What's my soil type?" A quick sample hole tells you everything. Proper depth = fences that actually last 15+ years instead of leaning by year 3.
