What is the difference between "messy" and "cluttered"?

"Messy" is the opposite of "Neat & Tidy". Neat & tidy spaces have three important qualities:

1. a reasonable amount of items for the size of the space and the storage available in it
2. items have a place or a home
3. Items stay in their place and are returned after each use

"Cluttered" means messy, disorganized, and covered with a lot of things.

How do I make my "cluttered" space Neat & Tidy? ORGANIZATION!!!! The process of organizing a space is simply going through specific steps to make the space a "Neat & Tidy" space. As an organizing professional I,

1. help the client sort through items, determine what to keep, discard or donate, and choose to only keep a reasonable number of items for the space
2. design a system that will work for that individual client and the way they live in the space, taking into account they way their brain works and accommodating any challenges they may face daily.
3. return items to the space, each to their designated home
4. educate and teach skills to the client to empower them to maintain the organized space over time

These organizing steps may sound simple but for many people it can be very overwhelming. I see a LOT of shaming on fb posts about people needing to hire a professional organizer to help with this process. As someone who helps people EVERY DAY and sees such a great need for this service, it is EXTREMELY frustrating to hear comments like "why can't you just throw things away?", "you have to hire someone to help you, that's sad" or other similar rude and judgmental comments.

TO THE SHAMERS, you may not struggle with disorganization but you likely struggle with something. Maybe even something you have to seek professional help for, or maybe should. Stop telling other people they should be ashamed for asking for help. They have a desire to live differently, have set an admirable goal to get their homes organized, and should be applauded for asking for recommendations of who to hire to help them.
