What does an Active Economy sound like?
Stop by the Millvale Food + Energy Hub on a Tuesday morning and you’ll hear the steamer on the espresso machine as Lemon Tree PGH serves up coffees and breakfast sandwiches to coworkers and neighbors who need fuel for their day.
Voices from 412 Food Rescue’s Good Food Project staff and volunteers who are stabilizing bulk food donations into ready to eat meals.
Conversations from people stopping by to meet New Sun Rising, FracTracker Alliance, and The Food Trust.
This former Moose Lodge, which houses small businesses, workforce training programs, a solar array and stormwater management system, employs 25 people, contributes more than $5 million in Gross Regional Product, and adds $600,000 in social value to the region each year.
In the Active Economy Report, the 21 highlighted projects from Allegheny and Beaver Counties are categorized into six clusters with the Millvale Food + Energy Hub identified within Real Estate Development and Energy. This facility and five others named in the report are projected to produce $83 million in total social value over 20 years.

Wolovich said small projects can be very important to their neighborhoods, but aren’t seen as regionally important. That makes it harder to get funding for those efforts.
“One of the things we wanted to do with this project was really help to lift up these hyperlocal projects and bring more awareness to their importance to the regional economy,” Wolovich said, “and therefore, hopefully, compel a shift in regional economic investment policy to think differently about how we're allocating public funds, how we're working to stimulate the regional economy and markets.”
