Tomorrow, Milwaukee will honor the vision, legacy, and community that have defined Halyard Park for five decades. Developed by Beechie O. Brooks as a place where Black families could build homes, stability, and generational wealth, Halyard Park remains a powerful example of what intentional, community-centered development can make possible.

Join the Halyard Park community tomorrow, September 19, for the unveiling of a statue honoring Beechie Brooks, followed by a celebration of the residents and leaders who have carried this neighborhood’s legacy forward.

The statue unveiling is at Gaines Triangle, North 6th and North Halyard Street, followed by the celebration program and refreshments at ThriveOn King, 2153 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

We’re proud to celebrate this important chapter in Milwaukee’s housing and neighborhood-development history.

We had a sold-out crowd of allies, residents, elected leaders, community planners, developers, and affordable housing activists coming together to make homeownership more achievable. Together, we've made incredible progress and continue to introduce new systems and solutions to make homeownership a reality for all Milwaukeeans. Yes, there is more work to be done, but the CDA team is full of gratitude and appreciation for all who attended and participated!

We're only one week away from "Thriving in Place: Advancing Homebuyer Support for Stronger Neighborhoods," CDA's fourth annual conference.

The conference emphasizes collaboration in addressing the availability of affordable housing. This year, we'll be demonstrating the Anti-Displacement Dashboard. You'll be able to actually see the elements of displacement and how they can be measured.

Community libraries are an incredible asset. Milwaukee is combining new libraries with affordable housing. The most recent example of this is the library on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, with apartments built as part of the project.

Thanks to the trade union and labor movements in the late 19th century, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Do you know the connection between organized labor and homeownership?

Organizations like Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America funded the construction of affordable housing for hundreds of families in New York in the 1920s. Affordable co-ops provided housing through the Great Depression. Labor’s push for affordable housing led to the passage of the Housing Act of 1937.

Collective bargaining raised household income and provided job stability, boosting financial security and homeownership readiness for lower-income households and historically marginalized groups.
