WCC members recently toured the Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility in Milwaukee, operated by Veolia for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District - MMSD.

The visit offered a firsthand look at how wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and innovative technologies support a cleaner, more sustainable region. WCC Members also learned how sustainable operating practices and alternative fuels can help reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and advance Wisconsin's clean transportation goals.

We learned on tour that Milwaukee has been making Milorganite for 101 years. Visitors to Milwaukee driving over the Hoan Bridge joke that it smells like a giant dog jumped in the lake - that “wet dog” smell is Milorganite Fertilizer - a popular slow-release organic nitrogen fertilizer made from heat-dried microbes used in municipal wastewater treatment by the MMSD.

Milorganite typically costs $20 to $25 per 32 lb bag, which covers roughly 2,500 sq. ft. It’s composed of 85%–90% organic matter, with a high iron content causing a deep, long-lasting green color without burning your lawn. The iron and sulfur compounds within the biosolid material are what create the distinct earthy, musty, fermented, metallic odor. Despite the smell, it's popular because it's non-burning and safe for children and pets when used as directed.

It may be the bane of Walker's Point real estate agents, who complain that potential out-of-town buyers dislike it, but many Milwaukee natives joke that’s the smell of “lower taxes for the city”. Milwaukee’s Milorganite industry creates $12.6 million in annual revenue.
