When access to healthy foods started declining in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood, resident Grian Hollis-Maxwell took matters into her own hands.

Enter, Maxwell Farms 🌱

As a demonstration farm, Maxwell Farms not only provides access to fresh produce for her community, but also a place to learn about urban agriculture. She hopes to empower others in her community to grow their own food.

Food sovereignty is one of Groundwork MKE’s core goals; it means each community has the right to a food system that is healthy, culturally appropriate, and shaped by the people who rely on it. Grian’s work shows what that looks like in practice: neighbors growing, learning, and sharing fresh food right where they live. 🥕💛

As a part of this vision, Groundwork MKE is building a green space across from Maxwell Farms. The 33rd and Hadley Green Space will include fruit trees and raised garden beds as just one of our nature-based solutions to ecological issues in the neighborhood. Join us on Oct. 16th and 17th to volunteer at Maxwell Farms and Groundwork's new green space. Click the link in our bio to sign up! 🔗

Allow us to reintroduce ourselves… 👋

For 20 years, Groundwork Milwaukee has been transforming land, training neighbors, and building community power across our city. Swipe to meet (or re-meet) the work, and send to someone in your neighborhood who you think should get involved.

Whether you’ve been here since day one or are just learning about Groundwork Milwaukee, we’ll be right here with you laying the groundwork. 🌱

💨‼️That smoke is adding to an already dangerous situation with our extreme heat. Be safe out there.

Some information to keep in mind.

-Keep and eye on our young folks and elders as they are most at risk.

-Keep smoke out of the home or at least one room. Shut the windows, and stuff something into any big cracks in doorsways/windowsills. This heat makes it hardneighbors without a/c.

-Check air quality like the weather! Plan your day around it. Our friends MKE FreshAir Collective are always doing the work to keep our lungs safe and are a good source to stay updated on current conditions.

-Don't overdo it in the garden or elsewhere outside! The plants, work, and fun will be here tomorrow. We want you to be here too!

We’re excited to relaunch our Green Team this year after a three-year hiatus! We’re honored to work alongside the other members of the Environmental Youth Collaborative in preparing the next generation of environmental leaders!

We're adjusting our programing next week to care for ourselves during the heat. Are there any garden tool experts in our community available to lead our Green Team in learning on how to maintain and the shovels, pruners, rakes, and other tools we use to steward the sacred outdoor spaces in our city?

We're looking for someone to join us Tuesday, June 30th sometime between 11:15 and 3:30pm. Hit us up here if this sounds like something you'd like to lead us with, or at [email protected].
