Happy Juneteenth! ❤️🖤💚
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston to inform the last enslaved African Americans that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It stands as a powerful reminder that freedom delayed is still injustice.
Here in Milwaukee, WI, Juneteenth carries deep historical significance.
Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration began in 1971, making it one of the oldest Juneteenth celebrations in the nation outside of Texas. It was founded through the leadership of local Black visionaries, including members of the Northcott Neighborhood House, community organizers, churches, and activists who wanted to create a space to celebrate Black freedom, excellence, culture, and resilience during a time when Black Milwaukeeans were still fighting systemic inequities in housing, education, and employment.
What started as a grassroots community gathering grew into Milwaukee’s annual Juneteenth Day Parade and Celebration, centered along historic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive—a corridor deeply rooted in Black business, culture, and activism.
Juneteenth is more than a celebration—it is a call to remember, reflect, and continue the work. As we honor our ancestors, we also honor entrepreneurs, leaders, educators, artists, and changemakers building legacy today.
Today, we celebrate freedom. We celebrate progress. We celebrate Black excellence - past, present, and future. ❤️🖤💚
Happy Juneteenth! ✊🏽
