our country sustained the worst attack on American soil since the Civil War. Once again, as in previous threats against America, our brave warriors selflessly went into battle to defend our Nation. Like all other wars, the atrocities they experienced were devastating. Many came home with visible scars and disfigurement, and just as many came home with the unseen wounds of war, such as Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The results of these injuries are often severely life altering, leading many to cope inadequately with the devastation they witnessed. The outcome for these brave servicemen and women frequently include anxiety, depression, social isolation, divorce, drug or alcohol abuse and suicide. Suicide for military veterans has reached the astounding rate of 22 per day and upwards of 8,000 per year. In our opinion... not enough. There are far too many veterans living untreated with these conditions. When diagnosed with PTS or TBI, evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy and medications are available. Unfortunately, veterans participate in a "warrior culture" that discourages the communication of weakness or empathy, which makes asking for and accepting help more challenging for vets. (1)
Therefore, a new treatment model would be beneficial. We feel that in addition to evidenced based treatments, another form of treatment has been proven to be highly successful for the overall well-being of veterans suffering the effects of PTSD, MST and TBI. At Project Delta this treatment involves the inclusion of dogs. Not just any dog, but dogs that are often overlooked and forgotten, often referred to as, "throw away" dogs. We at Project Delta are disturbed by statistics regarding the "throw away" dogs in our country. Nearly 4,000,000 of our beloved canine buddies are surrendered to shelters throughout the country each year. Many of these dogs are rescued from abusive, neglectful or unsafe conditions. Unfortunately, approximately 1,200,000 of these dogs are euthanized every year. We are convinced of this truth... many of the so called, "throw-away" dogs are just as suitable for providing service to veterans disabled with PTSD, MST or TBI as the dogs bread for this purpose. So, what we do at Project Delta is pair veterans with PTSD, MST and/or TBI with shelter or rescue dogs. Prior to the veteran-dog pairing, the dogs are prescreened by experienced dog trainers for basic service-dog criteria. The veteran and dog "choose" each other based on one another's personality and temperament. Upon matching, at no charge to the veteran, we train the veteran and dog to work as a service dog team. This process takes approximately 9 months depending on the needs of the veteran. Project Delta provides ongoing training and mandatory recertification for the service dog team. Project Delta is a 501c(3) non-profit organization based in Minneapolis, MN. In addition to facilitating the development of this amazing team, Project Delta also offers optional services to address the mind, body, and spiritual needs of the veteran.

The Clue: Moe is ready to roll! He managed to climb into the mobile office our officers use every single day on the streets of Crystal. He fits perfectly, but we arenāt letting him drive just yet. ššØ

Our patrol vehicles serve as a mobile office for officers, equipped with a mounted computer system, radar equipment, and secure transport dividers to handle daily emergencies on the streets of Crystal. These high-tech squads ensure our team can respond instantly, file reports from the field, and maintain a constant, visible safety presence in your neighborhood.

From isolation, lack of motivation or purpose, to a life of adventure, meaning and joy! A service dog is not a cure however it certainly is a bridge towards so much more in life!

Yesterday was an emotional day for us as we spent many hours at the Medical Examinerās office supporting their staff during a very trying time for them after the events that occurred the day before. It made us realize that after the work of our dogs, they too need to decompress and receive care for their weary minds and bodies. Quincy went home to a full on massage and 1:1 time with her handler allowing her to reset and understand her value. Post care for the dogs is now something we will be learning more about whether for a service dog or a facility dog. They have bodies and minds and they must be cared for.

š¾Game Fair 2026š¾
We had a wonderful training outing yesterday and today with Team Ducky, Team Dutch, and Team Gumbo at Game Fair!
The dogs had an absolute blast exploring their way through hundreds of vendor booths, catching every single fair food smell, taking in the excitement of gunshot sounds, wildlife calls, seeing hundreds of dogs and more. I am so beyond proud of each team who went, well doneā¤ļø

Yesterday I joined one of trainers for a coffee shop meeting and was able to spend time with Gumbo! We went back and forth about what breeds he must be, while working on a couple āmust get doneā items! Anyone have thoughts? Gumbo came to us from Companion Animal Alliance in Louisiana and we are so grateful! Please hop on our website if youāre so inclined to donate towards his completion of training!

This past Friday, my family laid to rest my husbandās brother Steve. Steve served his country honorably as a United States Marine Scout Sniper. He received full military honors as a result of a man who has become not only a friend, but a mentor for Project Delta. Stan Heuer went over and above the call of duty for Steve, but extended his kindness by honoring him as a Commander for the DAV. Project Delta will also honor Steveās memory by utilizing the Carlton County DAVās generous donation to support a veteran in need of a service dog.
