First U.S. Screwworm Case Confirmed in South Texas (La Pryor, Zavala County).
On June 3, 2026, the USDA confirmed New World screwworm was found in a calf near La Pryor, Zavala County—the first U.S. detection in decades. Screwworm larvae consume living tissue, making them a major threat to animals and a limited but real concern for humans.
With USDA and Texas Animal Health Commission containment measures in place, the situation is geographically limited, and the primary concern for residents is vigilant wound care, close monitoring of pets and livestock, and following local guidance to prevent further spread.
Residents in and around the La Pryor–Zavala County area should closely monitor all pets and livestock for any wounds, keep those wounds clean and covered, and limit animal exposure to areas where screwworm flies may be active, because the parasite can rapidly turn even minor injuries into severe, tissue‑destroying infestations. Pets—especially dogs and cats—should be checked daily for scratches, hot spots, or tick bites and kept on reliable flea and tick control while using vet‑approved repellents when appropriate.
Texas residents should also protect themselves by covering cuts, using EPA‑registered insect repellent, and avoiding contact with injured wildlife. Maintaining screened living spaces, securing trash, and keeping barns or kennels clean reduces fly attraction around homes. Anyone who notices a worsening wound on an animal or person should seek veterinary or medical care immediately and report suspected cases to local authorities to help contain the spread.
Yes, we have these in South Texas.

Copperheads are found across the central and eastern United States, with populations stretching from the Florida panhandle and the eastern seaboard to New England, and extending westward to Nebraska, Kansas, and eastern Texas. They inhabit various forested areas and rocky, damp habitats, and can be found in suburban and even urban areas where development has encroached on their natural environments.
