Congratulations to Scott Wright, General & Artistic Director of Mobile Opera, who was honored as one of Mobile Music Legends, Giants of Mobile Musical Heritage on July 21st, 2026. Scott is listed as one of Mobile’s Music Legends along with Theodore Arthur, E.B. Coleman (1930-1996), James Reece Europe (1880-1919), Willie Lee Hill, Jr., Fred Irby, III, Edward Pratt (a930-1978, James Seals (1928-2001), James Seals, Jr. (1942-2022), The Treniers, Fred Wesley, and Cootie Williams (1911-1985). Scott was presented with the award and an acknowledgement of achievement by the Office of the Mayor of Mobile as part of the annual celebration of Mobile Music Legends where he also served as emcee to induct Lil Greenwood (1924-2011), Jimmy Buffett (1946-2023), Joe Lewis, The Excelsior Band, and brothers, Ira and Ward Swingle into the Mobile Music Legends Hall of Fame.

The tribute reads: Scott Wright. Born in rural Tennessee into a musical family that soon relocated to Birmingham, AL, Scott learned to play piano and classical guitar, formed a folk music duo with his brother Edwin in the 1960s, and moved to Mobile in 1979. He is the General and Artistic Director of Mobile Opera and the General Director Emeritus of the International Performing Arts Institute in Bavaria, Germany. Scott is the 2026 winner of the Jonnie Dee Riley Little Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

This week we celebrate Scott Wright, General and Artistic Director of Mobile Opera, for his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

This morning the Mobile County Commission issued a resolution recognizing his contributions as strengthening the cultural fabric of the community and elevating Mobile County’s reputation as a center for arts and creativity. Thank you Commissioners Connie Hudson, Merceria Ludgood, and Randall Dueitt for this acknowledgement.

Scott will be honored at the Celebration of Alabama Arts, presented by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, this Thursday, May 14, 2026.
