“…I was there. I stood witness. I heard what came before. Though the World remembers that singular eternal cry, I alone recall the fuller truth, as the Admiral, lashed to the rigging and soaked in sorrow, whispered and history has overlooked.

He tugged at the collar of his full formal wool uniform, which, in retrospect, was a tactical error of biblical proportions. It was August. On the Gulf Coast. In wool. The man was braising in rank….We begged him not to wear it. The crew muttered warnings, subtle, desperate, soaked-through.

But the Admiral, ever proud, declared, “Protocol requires decorum,” …

And so it was, just as torpedoes loomed and valor curdled in our throats, that he loosed the more human cry “Damn this humidity.” I dare say it was not a lamentation, but a revelation. A prophecy. One that, unlike the torpedoes (and mercifully so), did not prove a dud.”

- from the memoirs of Eli Ezekiel Pruitt
USS Heartburn, Third Swampass Division, USN
Keeper of Farragut’s Forgotten Fury

At least that’s how we’d like to think it went down.

Today we remember The Battle of Mobile Bay on its 162nd and Admiral Farragut’s famous quotes!

If you think this is cool, grab one of these at Urban Emporium or in our online store.
