Hidden inside the walls of 307 N. Jackson are original hand-hewn timber postโshaped by hand and used as a major structural support for the home. They were entire lengths of the tree used!
No modern lumber. No power tools. Just craftsmanship that has stood for more than 165 years. And sheโs still doing her job.
The stories inside these walls just keep getting better.

EMERGENCY WORK APPROVED
The City of Mobile has issued a Certificate of Appropriateness for emergency stabilization work at 307 N. Jackson Street, where a long-neglected historic home in De Tonti Square is being restored.
The permit says the rear west wall has suffered significant structural deterioration after years of neglect and exposure to the weather. Portions of the wall have already collapsed, and additional sagging has raised concern about further failure.
The approved work is limited to stabilizing the rear west wall. The scope allows structurally unsound materials to be removed and deteriorated framing members to be replaced as needed to restore structural integrity and prevent further collapse.
No changes to the buildingโs design, layout or exterior appearance are proposed as part of the emergency stabilization. The listed project cost is $13,000.
The permit comes after 1818 Design announced it purchased the property and plans a top-to-bottom rehabilitation of the home, which dates to the 1860s.
The approximately 3,438-square-foot residence was recently marketed as a restoration opportunity. The listing described the home as needing a full renovation while retaining historic features such as soaring ceilings, tall windows, double galleries and original architectural details.
According to the listing, the property is among the last remaining homes on its block still awaiting restoration, with neighboring residences already having undergone extensive rehabilitation.
1818 Design describes the home as a Southern vernacular interpretation of Greek Revival architecture with Creole and Gulf Coast influences. The company says it plans to preserve the homeโs historic charm and exterior character while updating the interior for modern living.
Plans call for four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms when the restoration is complete.
