13 YEARS AGO TODAY, I QUIT MY CORPORATE JOB TO PURSUE MY DREAMS. TODAY, I AM CELEBRATING THAT DAY.

13 years ago, I quit my corporate job to pursue my dream of building a company. Yes, this was a big decision, but there was no doubt in my mind that I was ready. Don’t get me wrong; of course, I was a little uneasy about quitting. I remember thinking OMG what have I just done. I am no longer on payroll. I am responsible for making all the currency to pay my bills, and what about health coverage. I was definitely brainstorming, but I did not let that hold me back. Now this is what you call leaping out on faith. That decision has been transformative, and I want to share five lessons I’ve learned.
1. Follow your Dreams and Passion
It has always been my dream to open a computer repair business. I worked to refine my vision by using a gift that God gave me to provide a better opportunity for myself. It was easy figuring out what I wanted to do; I have always had a passion for computers. So, I put my talent to work. I decided to launch a computer repair company called Computer Hospital. The only way to do great work is to love what you do, which requires a great passion for what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. Even when things get tough, which it will, hang in there and follow your dreams.
2. Do What You Do Best
Hopes and dreams are what inspire, but without hard work and dedication, they never materialize. While, I had my full time job, I was also working on the weekends at Mobile Flea Market doing what I enjoy doing to make some extra cash. I worked really hard Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm on the full time job. Then, on the weekends, I would work at the Flea Market Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm providing sales, service, and repair of computers. This meant working 7 days straight. I did this for about 3 years. I have plenty of experience working with computers. I had no obstacles as to why I could not pursue my dreams. So I set out to do what I know how to do best. Just do what you do best, and the rest will fall into place. For me doing is the best way to learn.
3. Faith
As I was working full time during week and working at Flea Market on the weekends, I had no idea that this would lead to me quitting my job. But, God had a plan for me. I knew it was time to quit. God put me in a position where I was forced to quit.
Don’t let others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. I can’t tell you how many people told me that I would not make it repairing computers at a Flea market. This is something that I have been thinking about for quite some time. God just put the right people in my life to allow this to happen. . Faith and determination will help to overcome the obstacles and the self-doubt that will surely come.
4. Seek counsel from Positive Family and Friends
I worked hard to meet with successful entrepreneurs; I did a lot of reading about what it takes to open your own business. I also have lots of support from family and friends. With each consultation, I walk away with something: a new idea, a lead. It’s nice being able to seek counsel from such experienced individuals. It has been invaluable and has helped me minimize mistakes. Networking with like-minded individuals is a plus.
5. You Have Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain
So many people are inhibited from doing what they want because they feel they have something to lose. Pursuing my vision and building something of value are what matter to me. Remembering this helps me to be more fearless, more willing to take risks and ultimately, less afraid of failure. I have always been a high risk taker. You never know what you can do until you try.
On July 19th, 2013, I quit my job to pursue my dreams. Computer Hospital is officially launched. I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished and the success of my company. My values and experiences are the foundation of Computer Hospital. Building this company is a tribute to chasing dreams: the perseverance, working long hours, the stumbles along the way, all play a role with purpose and vision.
With all this said, don’t be afraid to chase your dreams. You never know what you can accomplish until you give it a try. There is nothing wrong with just accepting your limitations, enjoying your passions and saying "I'm Happy". If You believe it. You can achieve it!
