Fatal Collision Involving Turlock Transit Bus Under Investigation

Per Turlock PD:

“On September 24, 2026, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Turlock Police officers were dispatched to a hit-and-run collision on Lander Avenue, just north of Highway 99.

The preliminary investigation determined that a white Kia sedan, driven by Kevin Wooten, 53-year-old of Turlock, collided with another vehicle before leaving the scene. No injuries were reported in the initial collision.

While officers were responding to the first collision, Turlock Police received a report of a second collision near High Street and West Avenue South involving the same Kia and a
Turlock Transit bus.

Investigators determined Wooten was traveling westbound on High Street when he failed to stop at the intersection of West Avenue South and collided with the Turlock Transit bus. The impact caused the bus to leave the roadway and strike a nearby residence, partially entering the home. The residence was unoccupied at the time.

The collision also damaged a fire hydrant and a natural gas line, requiring the intersection to be closed while emergency crews and PG&E responded.

When officers arrived, Wooten was found unresponsive inside the Kia. Despite lifesaving efforts, Wooten was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Turlock Transit bus was occupied only by its driver, who sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver is expected to make a full recovery.

The Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and is continuing to investigate the collision. It is not known at this time whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the incident. Toxicology test results are pending.

This case remains under investigation by the Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact Officer Ferreira at (209) 668-6576.”

CHP Scores A Rare Crackdown of a Big Rig On I-5 🚛

Per CHP:

“🚛 76 MPH + WRONG LANE = PUMP THE BRAKES!

While patrolling I-5, CHP Officer Michaelson observed this commercial truck traveling in the #2 lane (out of lane), passing other commercial vehicles at 76 miles per hour- that’s 21 MPH over the legal limit for this vehicle!

Here’s the important part: Commercial vehicles subject to California’s 55 MPH maximum speed limit must obey that limit, regardless of the higher posted speed limit for other traffic. Commercial vehicles are also restricted from certain lanes depending on the roadway.

There’s a reason for these restrictions. A fully loaded commercial vehicle can weigh tens of thousands of pounds and requires significantly more time and distance to stop. Add excessive speed, and the driver has even less time to react when traffic conditions suddenly change. The consequences of a collision can be severe.

The driver was stopped and cited.

We appreciate the professional drivers who safely move goods through our communities every day. Please stay in the appropriate lanes, obey the 55 MPH limit when required, and give yourself plenty of time and space to react.

🚔 Slow down. Stay alert. Stay in your lane. Arrive alive.”

FROM POLICE UNION PRESIDENT TO POLICE UNION SCRUTINY: FORMER STOCKTON DEPUTY CHIEF NANCE REMAINS AT CENTER OF RENO CONTROVERSY

via 775 Times

Former Stockton Deputy Police Chief Kathryn Nance remains at the center of a major controversy involving the Reno Police Department.

The story has deep Stockton ties.

Nance spent roughly 25 years with Stockton Police, eventually becoming deputy chief. She was also a finalist for Stockton police chief in 2022 before Stanley McFadden was selected.

But before joining management, Nance sat on the other side of the table.

She served as president of the Stockton Police Officers Association, representing Stockton’s rank-and-file officers.

Nance left Stockton in 2023 to become Reno’s first female police chief.

Earlier this year, Nance and five members of Reno Police leadership were placed on administrative leave amid investigations into alleged policy violations. Nance and two assistant chiefs were subsequently fired without cause.

The investigation involving Nance and other former command staff has continued, with administrative matters now being handled through Reno Police Internal Affairs.

In an ironic reversal from her Stockton years, representatives of the Reno Police Protective Association have taken a critical posture toward department leadership while repeatedly distancing Reno’s rank-and-file officers from the allegations and controversy involving command staff.

Nance once headed the police union in Stockton.

She later became a deputy chief and came within one hiring decision of becoming Stockton’s police chief.

Now, as the former chief in Reno, she finds herself on the opposite side of a police labor organization as questions surrounding her administration continue to be investigated.

The investigations and allegations do not, by themselves, establish criminal wrongdoing.
