VAULT SHOWCASE No.15 - 1853 $1 Gold Piece This 1853 Gold Dollar was struck during a period of rapid economic growth fueled by the California Gold Rush, which increased the nation’s gold supply and made small gold coins practical for everyday commerce. It features the first Gold Dollar design by James B. Longacre, known today as the Type 1 design, with Liberty wearing a coronet on the obverse and the denomination surrounded by a wreath on the reverse. VAULT SHOWCASE No.9 - 1662 Dutch City of Deventer Ducat This large silver ducat was minted in the Dutch city of Deventer in 1662. The front appears to have had either a weak or damaged die as 16 in 1662 appears to be deformed or lightly struck. The Ducat was the second largest coin minted in this period by the Dutch with the “Ducaton” being the largest. That being said this coin is still very large being wider in diameter than US silver dollars. This coin features an amazing image of a Knight holding a sword and a shield featuring the coat of arms of Deventer on it. On the reverse a shield featuring the coat of arms of the Dutch and a crown. Large silver ducats from the Netherlands are rare coins but one from Deventer is a much harder find as less of them are out there compared to others. This coin will be for sale on our store soon!
