Teaching dogs AND their people so they can thrive TOGETHER!

Sunday evening was our first Novice Scent Work class, and these teams did such a great job! 🎉

We spent class practicing introducing the dogs to odor and setting up simple searches to help build confidence and understanding. I’m so proud of how everyone jumped right in and started learning to trust their dogs and their noses.
So many great searches and little wins already. I can’t wait to watch these teams grow over the next few weeks!

The most valuable skill I’ve taught my dogs?
How to do absolutely nothing. 😂

Today, I had a lot to get done—catching up on client emails, tackling some house chores, and getting things ready for my class this evening.

My dogs have been fed and let outside to potty a few times. They haven’t been for a walk yet, they haven’t had any play/enrichment time, and we haven’t done a training session yet today.

And that’s okay.

That doesn’t mean their needs won’t be met later. It just means that today is a busier day, and I’m able to cash in on all the settle training we’ve done while I check things off of my To Do list.

Teaching your dog how to settle, relax, and simply exist without constantly needing entertainment is an incredibly valuable life skill. Because some days are full of walks, training, enrichment, and adventures—and some days you just… can’t.

Meeting your dog’s physical, mental, and emotional needs is still very important. Settling isn’t an excuse to neglect those needs, at all. It’s a skill that gives you some flexibility when life gets busy.

And remember: not every dog comes preloaded with an “off switch.” For many dogs, learning how to relax is something we have to intentionally teach and practice.

Sometimes the most valuable skill isn’t flashy obedience or cool tricks, it’s being boring! Put in the work when you have the time, so you can cash in on it when you don’t!

“High value” looks different for every dog and determining what food rewards your dog finds most motivating can be incredibly beneficial for your training plan!

Fun fact, the same foundations of this “test” can be applied to determining your dog’s favorite toy if they are more toy/play motivated!

Today, we remember. 🇺🇸

On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced an unimaginable tragedy. We remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the first responders, and everyday heroes who ran toward danger to help others. We remember our canine partners and their handlers who searched the wreckage for months after to provide families with closure. We remember all of the brave men and women who watched those towers fall and said “never again” as they signed up to defend our nation.

Today, we honor their courage, sacrifice, and the countless people who continue to carry their memory forward.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Scent Work can be a fun and engaging way to enrich your dog and it’s a pretty awesome dog sport to compete in if that’s your goal!

In this 4 week class you will learn how to introduce your dog to odor, how to read and recognize your dog’s odor behavior, how to set practice hides at home, the 4 main scent work elements, and general information about competing in both the AKC and C-WAGS Scent Work venues.

Regardless if you ever step foot up to the start line, scent work is a fantastic game to play with your dog regardless of their size, age, or abilities. Because it relies on catering to your dog’s natural instinct to sniff rather than physical athleticism, every dog can participate and shine! It’s all about teamwork, confidence, and celebrating what your dog can do, rather than focusing on limitations.

Ready to put your dog’s nose to work? Class starts this Sunday!

The announcement you’ve been waiting for! 🎉

I am incredibly excited to officially announce my completion of the DogNosticsEducation Canine Enrichment Technician certification program! Canine enrichment is vital to having a happy, healthy, and fulfilled companion, and I’m so excited to start offering customizable enrichment programs and services to my wonderful clients!

Continuing education is incredibly important to me because I’m always looking for ways to grow my knowledge, expand my toolbox, and provide the best possible care to the dogs and humans I work with. This certification has given me a deeper understanding of how thoughtful, individualized enrichment can support a dog’s well-being and quality of life—and I can’t wait to put that knowledge to work!

Puppies are cute… but let’s be honest: they are also exhausting. 😂

One minute they’re curled up in your lap looking like the sweetest little angel you’ve ever seen, and the next they’re biting your ankles, stealing something they definitely shouldn’t have, and acting like 5 AM is the perfect time to start the day. 🙃

If you’ve found yourself wondering, “Okay… what did I sign up for?” welcome to puppy parenthood! You are definitely not alone. ❤️

Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. There’s potty training, chewing, jumping, biting, socialization, learning how to walk nicely, and approximately one million other things you suddenly realize your tiny four-legged roommate needs to learn.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

🐾 AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Class is here to help! 🐾

Over 6 weeks, you and your puppy will work together on important life skills like:

✨ Basic obedience
✨ Focus and engagement
✨ Impulse control
✨ Handling and cooperative care
✨ Socialization
✨ Good manners
✨ And more!

This hands-on class is designed to help both ends of the leash learn! You’ll gain the knowledge and tools you need to better understand your puppy, while your pup builds the skills they need to grow into a confident and well-mannered companion.

And of course, we’ll be learning through positive reinforcement and science-based training. Your puppy doesn’t need to be perfect—they’re a baby, after all! They need patience, guidance, consistency, and the opportunity to learn at their own pace. ❤️

🎓 At the end of class, your puppy will also have the opportunity to earn their very first AKC title: the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy title!

Ready to turn some of that puppy chaos into confidence? 🐶 Class is now enrolling and starts THIS TUESDAY!

Where? Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital
When? Tuesdays for 6 weeks starting 9/8

Puppies are HARD. Like… really hard.

They’re adorable, cuddly, and full of personality—but they are also tiny menaces with sharp teeth, wake you up at 5 AM, and somehow manage to find every single thing in your house that they shouldn’t have. 🙃

If you’ve ever looked at your puppy and thought, “What did I get myself into?” — I promise, you are not alone. ❤️

Puppyhood is a LOT of work, and you shouldn’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

That’s exactly why I love teaching the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Class. Over 6 weeks, we’ll work on the skills that make living with your puppy a little easier—from basic obedience and focus to impulse control, handling, socialization, and good manners. This class is hands on to allow for learning on BOTH ends of the leash which sets you and your puppy up for a lifetime of success with one another!

And we’ll do it using positive reinforcement and science-based training, because your puppy doesn’t need to be “perfect.” They need guidance, patience, consistency, and a human who understands that learning takes time.

Also, at the end of class, your pup will have the opportunity to earn their very first title - the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy title! 🎓
