This Week on CSD’s Tip Tuesday

Not all succulents flower, but when they do, it’s quite magnificent.

Flowering is a sign that your succulent has the energy and conditions it needs to reproduce. While some varieties flower regularly, some may not flower at all and others may only bloom when they’re mature with the right combination of sunlight, temperature, season, and water availability.

And because flowering takes a lot of energy, it isn’t something every succulent does frequently. So when yours does bloom, enjoy it! It’s one of the most rewarding surprises of growing succulents.

This Week on CSD's Tip Tuesday:

Soil Volume

One thing we love about succulent plants is that they don't need perfect conditions to thrive. People often assume succulents need big planters filled with lots of soil. However, many succulents have relatively small root systems and are perfectly happy with a surprisingly small amount of soil. What they really don’t like is sitting in excess moisture.

This is one of the reasons they make excellent plants for indoor terrariums or planters. Their compact root systems allow them to grow in small spaces, while their low water needs make them easy to incorporate into a little miniature landscape.

CSD's Tip Tuesday:

Have you ever noticed a sunflower turning to follow the sun? While most houseplants don't move that dramatically, they do naturally grow toward their light source over time.

If your terrarium always faces the same direction, your succulents may begin to lean or stretch toward the window.

To help maintain a balanced, natural looking arrangement, simply rotate your terrarium a quarter turn every week or two. It's a small habit that can make a big difference in keeping your display looking its best.

A healthy terrarium is a happy terrarium.

CSD's Tip Tuesday: Let's Talk Sunshine!

One of the biggest misconceptions about succulents is that they love blazing, allday sun. While some varieties do, most indoor succulents actually thrive in bright, indirect light.

What does "bright, indirect light" mean?
Near a sunny window, but not sitting in harsh afternoon sun. Think of a room that's bright enough to read in without needing a lamp.

What is partial shade?
Partial shade means your succulent receives about 3–6 hours of gentle morning sun or filtered sunlight throughout the day. Morning sun is ideal because it's much less intense than the afternoon sun.

Signs your succulent is getting too much sun:
Bleached or faded leaves
Brown or crispy spots (sunburn!)
Leaves looking dry even after watering

Not enough light?
Your succulent may stretch toward the light, becoming tall and "leggy."

The sweet spot is bright, indirect light with a little gentle morning sun and your succulent will reward you with compact growth and vibrant colors.

This week on CSD's Tip Tuesday:

Succulents are drought-resistant, but they can't survive a flood.

These amazing plants evolved to store water in their leaves, stems, and roots so they can handle long periods without rain or waterings. What they don't tolerate well is sitting in constantly wet soil.

That's why we recommended a basic watering schedule for every terrarium and every plant. It's designed to help you avoid overwatering while giving your plants a chance to dry out in between.

When in doubt, err on the side of dry. It's almost always better to wait another day than to add more water.

Healthy succulents are happy succulents.
