Zitkála-Šá (1876–1938) was a remarkable Yankton Dakota woman whose legacy as a writer, editor, translator, musician, educator, and political activist continues to inspire. After attending and later teaching at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, she courageously spoke out against its assimilationist policies—an act that led to her dismissal. Returning home to care for her mother, Zitkála-Šá began collecting and preserving traditional Indigenous stories, ensuring that these vital narratives would endure for future generations.

"Traveling the country and learning about history can provide some existential comfort, since it shows that Americans have managed to get themselves out of big messes before. At the very least it makes it harder to say that things today are worse than ever. Among its other fine qualities, the past offers tools for thinking about how to create change in situations where the odds look daunting. One of those tools in the American narrative itself--its symbols and heroes, its lessons and points of caution."
