I said that out loud to my husband, sitting in the bleachers at my daughter’s volleyball game, watching kids dog it through a rotation like they’re doing us a favor by showing up.

Then the bench erupted. “Good job!” For what?

And I’ll be hated for this, but I’m a millennial, so I can speak on this better than any generation.

I was the first generation handed a participation ribbon just for existing. I know exactly what that does to a kid long-term, because I watched it happen to my own generation. Some of us got soft and comfortable. We started believing showing up was the same as leveling up.

It’s not.

My husband is competitive. I’m competitive. Our kids are competitive. And it has nothing to do with opponents - we compete with who we were yesterday. Just showing up isn’t an option.

In our house, that’s not a flaw, it’s the entire point.
And, it’s why signing up for a sport is required.

It’s also why hobby’s are required. Because you have to know the difference.

If you want a hobby, go get a hobby. Paint. Crochet. Write. Do a puzzle. Nobody’s keeping score and nobody should be.

But the second you step on a court or put a uniform on, you agreed to compete. That’s the deal. And when we hand out trophies, ribbons and high-fives for showing up, we’re not being kind. We’re telling kids that mediocre and excellent get treated the same.

Was I picking grass in the outfield at 5 years old in t-ball? Sure was.
Did anyone hand me a trophy for it? They sure did.
Did it confuse the hell out of me? Also, yes.

Push your kids to give 100% vs just showing up.
Let them lose, let them feel it and high-five them for it.
Because if they gave 100% and “failed” they have nothing to be ashamed of.
But if they gave 50% and failed, that’s on us.

You can have a soft heart and an intensely competitive spirit - I’m proof.
And I’ll never apologize for throwing away participation ribbons.

Financial freedom has nothing to do with making more money. I've worked with dozens of entrepreneurs who are millionaires on paper that have zero financial freedom.

Those entrepreneurs could sell ice to Eskimos.
Their top line continued to climb year after year.

But, they were passionate visionaries who were over leveraged, spending increased faster than revenue, margins became thin and their teams had limited business acumen.

Yet, most of those entrepreneurs blamed the revenue.

They thought their financial freedom and freedom in general could be fixed with increased revenue.

It couldn't.

Their freedom started with...
- the right people in the right seats.
- ongoing business acumen education for those people.
- a transparent leader holding those people accountable.
- KPI's that matched what actually moved the business forward.

Then reinvesting in sales, marketing & CS.

Because when you start by doing the opposite, you'll never gain the freedom you're seeking.

This is why I run Revenue Without You with every entrepreneur that desires freedom.
Because if you desire freedom, you have to have systems and a team that support it.

You cannot have revenue without you until you have systems that support it.

That’s exactly what our Revenue Without You program does.

We spend 90 days setting up the systems needed to get you out of that revenue driving away so that your business can make money WITHOUT you.

If you built this business against all odds and are now tired of being the only reason it makes revenue - this is for you.

Comment REVENUE and I’ll send you the link to learn more.

What gets lost in the hustle culture conversation is the love for what you do. People are so busy debating hours, boundaries and morning routines that nobody’s asking the more important question: do you even like what you’re doing?

Loving what you do is the whole point.

Work should not consume you. But that kind of love for what you do is what makes the hard seasons survivable. It’s what makes the boat an office sometimes and that place somewhere you actually want to be.

I think hustle culture has caused an entire generation of people to confuse exhaustion with ambition, and they’re far from the same thing.

If you want to live life on your own terms, find something you wouldn’t mind working on for 24 hours straight because you actually can’t put it down. Not in an unhealthy way, in an inspiring way that makes others want to find that thing that lights them up too.

The goal was never to work less. It was to work on something that doesn’t feel like work at all.

If you’re an owner wanting to do more of what you love, join us in person for Scaling Beyond The Founder.

Your hard work doesn't reward you forever. There comes a point where you have to slow down to speed up.

I've been there - burned out, wondering why I'm doing this, that I thought it should be easier by now - and then I made it easier.

I made intentional decisions that built an engine without needing me 24/7.

It's why Amanda & I are hosting Scaling Beyond The Founder in July - because you deserve to be able to do it different.

Is leadership an exclusive club for those who are naturally extroverted & charismatic, or is it a skill anyone can develop?

I received this epic quote from Simon Sinek in my inbox today and it reminded me of when Nova was asked by Gabb Wireless what she thinks a great leader is, & her answer brought tears to my eyes.

“I think a good leader is very courageous and makes sure that the people they are working for are happy, and doing their best work.”

Hearing it from a 9 year old, it begs the question is someone born with natural leadership skills? Or, is it a skill anyone can develop?

I’m big on nature vs/& nurture so let’s dive into that regarding leadership.

Studies show 30-60% of leadership ability can be attributed to genetics. Charisma & Emotional Intelligence (E.Q.) being the high attributing nature factors.

70% of leadership development happens on the job, 20% through mentoring, 10% through formal training. (Center for Creative Leadership)

Though some are born with very high E.Q., typically it naturally increases with age AND can be polished through training.

And while certain personality traits make leadership easier for some, skills like communication, decision-making, & conflict resolution are learned & imperative for long term leadership success.

All things considered, Leadership is not an exclusive club.

Sure, like most things, some are naturally gifted in this area.

But, anyone with a growth mindset who wants to put in the work, can achieve success as a leader.

What did you have to really work as a leader, that didn’t come naturally?

Only measuring progress by “more” creates an ego attachment to more. Is your ego attached to more?

The funny thing here is, more isn’t always money, material things, more followers, a higher title, a bigger house, more sales…

Sometimes it’s more…
complaining…
worrying…
struggle…

Ego doesn’t care what feeds it, it’s fed by identification.

Once you become aware that you’re attaching yourself to something, that’s when transformation happens.

That’s when the ego slows its growth.

Becoming aware is the only way to achieve peace in your life.

If you desire peace, become aware of how you’re feeding your ego.

When you’re ready to become more aware, I highly recommend this book 👉 https://amzn.to/3Wot5rU
