Considered today among the foremost figurative painters of the 20th century, Alice Neel spent most of her career in New York working in relative obscurity, receiving the acclaim of critics and curators only late in her life. Her subjects were usually friends or acquaintances; in this painting, she portrays pioneering art historian Linda Nochlin and Nochlin's six-year-old daughter, Daisy.

Shortly after the publication of Nochlin's seminal essay "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" in 1971, Neel invited her to sit for a portrait. Long an advocate for women's rights, Neel felt a strong sympathy with Nochlin's text, which provoked a reevaluation of the conditions and prejudices that historically caused so many female artists to be overlooked.

The German cleaning company Kärcher once used industrial pressure washers to “clean-draw” a massive image of Godzilla onto the face of the Iwaya Kawauchi Dam in Japan. Instead of adding paint, the artwork was created by selectively washing sections of the dam’s surface—turning dirt and grime into a giant canvas.

It raises questions about the role of external influences, such as mentors or institutions, in shaping artistic expression.
