The Food & Thought family is heartbroken to share the passing of our dear friend Marty, a beloved musician and a true focal point of our live music events over the years. For so many of us, Marty was part of what made an afternoon or evening at Food & Thought feel like home.

Regulars knew him by name. First time visitors often stopped mid errand just to listen. That was the effect Marty had on a room, or a patio, or anywhere he happened to be playing.

Marty’s love of music began in his teens, and it never let go of him. Long before he ever played for an audience here in Naples, music was simply how he moved through the world. It was his companion, his comfort, and his way of connecting with people wherever life took him. And life took him far.

As a young man, Marty sailed the world on merchant ships, playing to pass the time as the ocean carried him from port to port. Those years shaped him. They gave him stories, patience, and a musician’s ear.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, Marty played the storied waterfront bars of Fells Point in Baltimore, a neighborhood famous for its cobblestone streets, its maritime history, and its live music. Fells Point has hosted generations of working musicians, and Marty was proud to be among them. From there, life carried him to the Caribbean island of St. Maarten, where he worked and played alongside musicians from all over Europe. The island gave him new sounds, new styles, and new friendships, and he wove all of it into his music.

Like so many working musicians, Marty eventually set his guitar aside for a season of life. He built a career with GE and gave those years his full attention. But music has a way of waiting patiently for the people who love it. When Marty retired, he made a decision that would become a gift to our entire community. He went back to music.

We are forever grateful that his return led him to Food & Thought. Our live music events continue, but there will be a note missing, and we will feel it.

Rest easy, Marty. Thank you for sharing your music with us & the music community. 🙏

Live music July is here and we’re ready for every bit of it!! 🍉🎶We are bringing you live music every Friday & Saturday night under the Florida sky!

Friday open mic night welcomes local artists and families for three hours of live rotating performances. Saturdays we turn it up with featured artists who bring their own sound and story to the stage. 😎

In the meantime, come select one or more of our seeded and / or seedless watermelons! 🍉 Juicy & delicious. 😋 It’s the season of the stone fruit and watermelon!

Live music has become such a meaningful part of what we do! Bringing people together, creating a sense of ease, and adding something special to weekends.

With the transition into longer, lighter evenings and a new seasonal pace, we’re refining how that experience shows up.

Beginning this May, live music will take place on Friday nights only!

Friday and Saturday nights will continue to reflect what matters most to us, supporting local musicians, creating a welcoming environment for families and friends, and pairing great music with organic food, fresh smoothies, and thoughtful offerings that feel good to be part of. 🤗
