Ask an advocate: your questions answered
Have questions about navigating incarceration, visitation rules, reentry, or finding the right resources? You’re not alone, and we’re here to help.
In each issue, we’ll feature (anonymous) real questions from families just like yours, answered thoughtfully by advocates who understand the system and care about your journey. Whether you’re unsure how to stay connected, need help preparing for a loved one’s release, or simply want advice, send us your questions!
Submit your question(s) here. Let us know what state you are in, if your loved one is in a DOC or BOP facility, and if you are reaching out for the newsletter Q&A section! https://fourthpurpose.org/about/contact-us/

Depression After Stroke: It's More Common Than You Think
One of the hardest parts of stroke recovery isn't always the physical challenges—it's what happens emotionally.
Many stroke survivors experience depression, anxiety, grief, or a loss of identity. You may wonder why you don't feel like yourself anymore, why you're exhausted all the time, or why activities you once enjoyed no longer bring you happiness.
The truth is, depression after stroke is common. I’ve experienced it too. It's not a sign of weakness, laziness, or a lack of gratitude. Recovery changes your brain, your body, your relationships, your independence, and often your sense of who you are. That's a lot for anyone to carry.
As a stroke survivor myself, I know that healing isn't just about learning to walk again or regaining physical strength. It's also about rebuilding hope, confidence, purpose, and believing that your life still has meaning.
If you're struggling, please know this: you are not alone, and you don't have to go through it by yourself. Talk to your doctor, connect with other stroke survivors, lean on people you trust, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Seeking support is a sign of strength.
Recovery isn't about becoming the person you were before your stroke.
It's about discovering the person you're becoming.
💛 If this message resonates with you, or if you're supporting someone who's had a stroke, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Your story may give someone else the hope they need today.
