✨ Artist Spotlight: Vida Chenoweth

Vida Chenoweth helped establish the marimba as a serious solo concert instrument, performing on six continents and inspiring new repertoire.

After an accident injured her arms and hands, her musical life changed direction. She pursued linguistics and ethnomusicology, studied the music of the Usarufa people in Papua New Guinea, and later catalogued nearly 1,000 field recordings.

“We convey facts with words, but we convey feelings with music.”

✨ Artist Spotlight: Clair Omar Musser

Clair Omar Musser helped transform the marimba from a novelty into a major concert instrument.

For the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, he organized a 100-piece marimba orchestra, designed the instruments, selected and taught the performers, arranged the music, and conducted the ensemble.

“There is no such thing as perfection, at least in music.”

✨ Artist Spotlight: Leigh Howard Stevens

Leigh Howard Stevens began developing four-mallet technique from the very start, asking, “How else are you going to be able to play chords?”

While still a student at Eastman, he began shaping the ideas that became Method of Movement for Marimba. Every major publisher he approached rejected it. Today, the book is in its 15th printing, has been translated into five languages—and one of the companies that rejected it is now owned by Stevens.

✨ Artist Spotlight: Éric Sammut

From classical music and jazz to pop, rock, and improvisation, Éric Sammut has developed a musical language entirely his own.

While preparing for the 1995 Leigh Howard Stevens International Marimba Competition, he practiced missing low notes by drawing them on paper beside a 4⅓-octave marimba. The competition was his first time playing all the notes on a five-octave marimba—and he won First Prize.

✨ Artist Spotlight: Marta Klimasara

For Marta Klimasara, the story is not only about what she has done for the marimba, but also what the marimba has done for her.

She first encountered the instrument at thirteen. Growing up in Eastern Europe in the 1980s, she had limited access to five-octave marimbas and original repertoire. Years later, shortly after arriving in Stuttgart, she toured Japan with the Stuttgart Percussion Ensemble at Keiko Abe’s invitation—an experience she described as truly eye-opening.

In her interview in Masters of the Marimba, Klimasara reflects on sound, technique, teaching, collaboration, and the ways the marimba shaped her life.

“The marimba has given me the possibility to start my life’s journey.”
