Seattle opened the strip of land between sidewalk and street for growing food, and whole blocks turned that leftover grass into shared pantries. In 2009 the city dropped its 225 dollar permit fee for planting strip gardens under Mayor Nickels, clearing red tape that once kept that land as plain mowed grass. Neighbors who used to just nod now trade tomatoes over dirt the city used to mow, and other cities copied the rule once food replaced turf nobody wanted. Find urban growers on Localize.

Final Voicemail of 9/11 Victim Stephen Mulderry Preserves a Last Message of Love NEW YORK, September 11, 2001 Among the personal accounts preserved from the September 11 terrorist attacks is a brief voicemail left by Stephen V. W. Mulderry, a 33-year-old equity trader who was working at the World Trade Center. Mulderry was a vice president for equity trading at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods and was on the 89th floor of the South Tower when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the building at 9:03 a.m. Amid the chaos, he called his mother, Anne Mulderry, and left a message on her answering machine in Kinderhook, New York. The Final Voicemail “Mom, it’s Stephen. Um, my building got hit by a plane, and right now I think I'm okay. I'm safe now, but just thank you... I just want to say how much I love you, and uh... I will uh, call you when I'm safe. OK, Mom. Bye.” Mulderry did not survive the collapse of the South Tower at 9:59 a.m. He was among 67 employees of Keefe, Bruyette & Woods who died in the attacks. The recording was preserved by his family and remains a deeply personal account of the tragedy, capturing Mulderry's attempt to reassure his mother and express his love during the unfolding catastrophe.

Todd Beamer's actions during the events of September 11 remain a powerful example of courage, selflessness, and leadership under unimaginable circumstances. Faced with extraordinary danger, he chose to put the safety of others before himself, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire people around the world. True courage is revealed in the moments when fear could easily take over. Strength is not the absence of fear but the willingness to act with conviction, protect others, and remain faithful to your values even during life's greatest challenges. The choices we make in difficult times define the impact we leave on those around us. Acts of bravery, compassion, and sacrifice remind us that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary courage when it matters most. A meaningful legacy is built through character, integrity, and selfless actions. Live with purpose, stand for what is right, and remember that true heroes are remembered not for what they gained, but for what they gave.
