🌊 Big news for our local marine life—and the students protecting it!

While many high schoolers spent their summer at the pool or the mall, 18 ambitious New Rochelle High School students and three college interns stepped up as Eco Ambassadors at Five Islands Park through the Youth Bureau’s "Learn and Earn" program.

Guided by NRHS science teachers Jonathan LaRosa and Carmen Glenn, these students spent six weeks diving deep into marine science, cataloguing oysters, ribbed mussels, fiddler crabs, and native mud crabs using seine nets in the salt marsh.

The students paired sonar devices with a student-built SeaPerch submersible robot to gather data beneath the surface. They wrapped up with field trips, guest speaker sessions, and a final research project gallery walk.

To celebrate their hard work, the students were officially honored at New Rochelle City Hall and awarded certificates by local officials! 📜✨

Former Eco Ambassadors have gone on to study marine, animal, and environmental sciences in college or join NRHS's Green Club to keep up the environmental activism.

A huge thank you to the Long Island Sound Community Impact Fund and our partners at the Energy Justice Law and Policy Center for funding this incredible grant-backed program!
