For artist Amy Tenenouser, making art is a powerful way to build community.

At her Painting & Collage workshop, the session began with introductions, giving participants a chance to get to know one another before creating. At the end of the class, everyone gathered to share their work.

“When everyone in the class sees everybody else’s work, that is usually a big moment,” says Tenenouser. “They learn from that. They see different ideas. They get excited. And I feel that really starts to build a sense of community. The more we meet, the more that community grows.”

Through programs like this, DOROT creates opportunities for older adults to learn something new, express themselves creatively, and build meaningful connections.

A big congratulations to Abigail Gomez, Program Coordinator for DOROT's Kosher Meals at Home program, along with Steve Delorenzo and Anthony "Tony" Matos, on being selected as this year's Citymeals on Wheels STAR Award honorees and recognized at last week's STAR Awards event at Bay Ridge Center. 🎉

Through her work, Abigail Gomez helps connect older adults with nutritious meals and vital support. Since 1986, Steve Delorenzo has been delivering meals to DOROT participants, providing not just nourishment, but meaningful human connection. Alongside Anthony "Tony" Matos, he has built trusted relationships with older adults who look forward to their visits each week. Together, Abby, Steve, and Tony exemplify the compassion, dedication, and sense of community that make DOROT's work possible.

Join us in celebrating Abby, Steve, and Tony on this well-deserved recognition!

We are so grateful for our volunteers who came out on a weekday to spend time making an older adult's day!

Thanks to you, we were able to delivery hundreds of Rosh Hashanah packages to our older neighbors and connect with them for friendly visits, both in person and over the phone.

We cannot say enough how meaningful it is that you take the time to make our community better. 💜
